Absorbent structures that form superabsorbent polymers in situ. The structures include an absorbent material and a fibrous material containing an activating agent. The fibrous material releases the activating agent upon stimulation with an activator, which causes the polymer to become a superabsorbent polymer. The absorbent component is desirably a water-swellable, water-insoluble polymer. The absorbent structures form a superabsorbent composition in situ. Methods of making the activating agent containing fibrous material are provided.

Textile materials, including paper webs, treated with a polyvinylamine polymer and a second agent that interacts with the polyvinylamine polymer are disclosed. The second agent added with the polyvinylamine polymer can be, for instance, a polymeric anionic reactive compound or a polymeric aldehyde-functional compound. When incorporated into a paper web, the combination of the polyvinylamine polymer and the second agent provide improved strength properties, such as wet strength properties. In an alternative embodiment, the polyvinylamine polymer and the second polymer can be applied to a textile material for increasing the affinity of the textile material for acid dyes.

An odor control system is formed by treating cellulose fibers with a partially neutralized carboxylic acid odor control agent. The odor control system absorbs odor and inhibits formation of various odor-producing bacteria. The odor control system is useful in the absorbent cores of a wide variety of personal care and medical absorbent garments.

The present invention is directed to ion-sensitive, water-dispersible polymers. The present invention is also directed to a method of making ion-sensitive, water-dispersible polymers and their applicability as binder compositions. The present invention is further directed to fiber-containing fabrics and webs comprising ion-sensitive, water-dispersible binder compositions and their applicability in water-dispersible personal care products.

Curly cellulose fibers having a high wet resiliency and a method of making high wet resiliency curly cellulose fibers with a chemically-assisted curling method. Polymeric reactive compounds are used to provide intrafiber crosslinking in curly fibers, thereby chemically setting the curl in the fibers, resulting in fibers that are stiff enough to not collapse upon wetting. These high wet resiliency curly cellulose fibers maintain a capillary structure during fluid acquisition and distribution, thus increasing absorbency.

A fibrous material, which can be an absorbent material, includes a plurality of natural fibers treated with a carboxylic acid-based odor control agent, which are able to withstand insults with an aqueous liquid without dissolving the odor control agent. The acid-based odor control agent is bound to the natural fibers by an organosilicone polymer binder. The binder is water-insoluble, and can form a highly gas permeable coating. The binder is also highly porous, so as to expose the odor control agent to ammonia and other odoriferous gases which it is intended to control.

A process for manufacturing a cellulosic paper product is provided. The process comprises forming an aqueous suspension of papermaking fibers; introducing a borate compound, preferably boric acid, into the aqueous suspension; depositing the aqueous suspension onto a sheet-forming fabric to form a wet web; and dewatering and drying the wet web. The process of the present invention provides cellulosic paper products exhibiting a reduced malodor upon re-wetting.

Methods are disclosed for producing absorbent articles comprising molded airlaid webs and other molded fibrous webs. The molded webs can offer improved body fit and/or improved fluid handling. Molded airlaid webs, for example, can be formed having a central longitudinal hump and flexure zones longitudinally removed from the central hump to provide good contact with the body and improved fit when the article is squeezed from the sides. Molding can be achieved when a binder material is activated by an energy source and the web is held against a molding substrate. Energy sources can include microwaves, heated air, heated metal surfaces, ultraviolet radiation, ultrasonic energy, and the like.

Methods of immobilizing uncomplexed and complexed cyclodextrins to cellulose fibers and compositions including cyclodextrin immobilized to cellulose fibers are provided. The cyclodextrins are immobilized using a crosslinking means that covalently bonds the cyclodextrin to the substrate, without the cyclodextrin being derivatized. The compositions can be used in all types of cellulose fiber containing articles, such as tissues and personal care articles, for odor absorbency or for release of complexed molecules.
