Traffic engineering and bandwidth management of bundled links may, at times, require the selection of one of a plurality of component links in a bundled link to use in admitting a connection requiring admission. While performing the selection it may be determined that more than one of the component links has the resources required to admit the connection. An admission policy may then be selected from among a plurality of admission policies. Based on the selected admission policy, a particular component link may then be selected. Such bandwidth management, based on admission policies, may be seen to be well suited to balancing and component link recovery in traffic engineered, connection-oriented MPLS networks.

Traffic engineering and bandwidth management of bundled links

A recovery method for use in a connection-oriented network having nodes interconnected by links for establishing connections within the network, the method described enables the recovery of connections in the network in the event of a failure. The recovery method includes the following steps: (a) assigning connection re-routing priority to the connections in the network based on configured polices in response to the failure; and (b) creating release message bundles based on the assigned connection re-routing priority for use by the nodes in the network to recover connections. More specifically, a failure (e.g., link failure) could affect hundreds or thousands of connections passing through a node. To recover these connections, the node determines which connections should be recovered first and which connections can wait (or may never be recovered). The recovery method determines the priorities of re-routing connections after failure. After the re-routing priorities are determined for connections, the present invention provides mechanisms for bundling release messages and pacing the messages using hold-off timers to maximize the recovery of connections based on various network configurations and implementations.

Priority and policy based recovery in connection-oriented communication networks

A method of allocating bandwidth for transmitting upstream cells from a CPE unit to a BTS. The CPE determines arrival time information associated with each cell and sends arrival time information associated with at least one cell to the BTS. The BTS allocates future bandwidth to the CPE as a function of the arrival time information received from the CPE. For example, the BTS estimates the number of cell arrivals occurring in the current scheduling period based on past cell arrival times. The BTS then sends information to the CPE in which the allocated future bandwidth is specified. Finally, the CPE groups a number of cells into a burst packet occupying the allocated bandwidth and sends the burst packet to the BTS. Rather than respond in a delayed manner to a bandwidth deficiency or surplus at an individual CPE unit, the BTS produces an estimate of a CPE unit's bandwidth demands, resulting in more efficient bandwidth utilization and reduced cell loss ratio.
