Disclosed is a connecting harness that connects M first devices (where M is an integer equal to or greater than 1) and N second devices (where N is an integer equal to or greater than 2) using connecting cords each including at least one of an optical fiber cord and a metal cord. The connecting harness includes a connecting cord group including the M&#xd7;N connecting cords, in which first connectors capable of being connected to the first devices are provided at one end of each of the connecting cords and second connectors capable of being connected to the second devices are provided at the other end of each of the connecting cords; a first bundling member bundling the connecting cords of the connecting cord group beside the first device in a predetermined number; and a second bundling member bundling the connecting cords of the connecting cord group beside the second device in a predetermined number. The connecting cord group is made into a harness in advance such that the connecting cords correspond to connection ports of the first devices and connection ports of the second devices using the first bundling member and the second bundling member.

A pipe is formed by an inside vapor phase deposition method such that glass layer to be formed into a core and a glass layer to be formed into a part of a cladding pipe are deposited in a starting pipe, the glass layers each containing at least one of fluorine, germanium, phosphorous, and chlorine, the starting pipe being made of a silica glass having an outside diameter in the range of 20 to 150 mm and a wall thickness in the range of 2 to 8 mm. The pipe thus formed is collapsed to form a glass rod in which the concentration of hydroxyl groups is 10 weight ppm or less in a region from the surface of the glass rod to a depth of 1 mm therefrom.

An optical cable according to the present invention relates to an optical cable having a construction to enable reduction of a cable outer diameter, and/or improvement of contained efficiency of coated optical fibers while an increase of transmission loss in each coated optical fiber is suppressed. The optical cable has a loose-tube type of structure constructed by: a tension member; a plurality of tubes stranded together around the tension member; and an outer sheath covering the outer periphery of the plurality of tubes. One or more coated optical fibers are contained in each tube. A ratio of A/B is 6.3 or more but 7.0 or less, where each coated optical fiber has a mode field diameter A in a range of 8.6&#xb1;0.4 &#x3bc;m at a wavelength of 1.31 &#x3bc;m, and where a fiber cutoff wavelength thereof is B &#x3bc;m.

The present invention relates to a compact dispersion compensator and the like. The dispersion compensator comprises a housing and an optical fiber coil. The optical fiber coil has a coiled part constituted by a dispersion-compensating optical fiber wound like a coil while being in a bundle state with its winding distortion substantially eliminated. The housing is filled with a resin surrounding the coiled part of the optical fiber coil, whereas the coiled part is held by the resin. By this structure, the dispersion compensator can realize a further compactness.

The present invention relates to a compact dispersion compensator and the like. The dispersion compensator comprises a housing and an optical fiber coil. The optical fiber coil has a coiled part constituted by a dispersion-compensating optical fiber wound like a coil while being in a bundle state with its winding distortion substantially eliminated. The housing is filled with a resin surrounding the coiled part of the optical fiber coil, whereas the coiled part is held by the resin. The dispersion-compensating optical fiber constituting the optical fiber coil has a chromatic dispersion of &#x2212;140 ps/nm/km or less at a wavelength of 1.55 &#x3bc;m, whereas the housing has a volume of 500 cmor less. This configuration allows the dispersion compensator to attain an accumulated chromatic dispersion of &#x2212;1200 ps/nm/km or more but less than &#x2212;600 ps/nm at a wavelength of 1.55 &#x3bc;m.
