Provided is a communication apparatus including a determination unit that determines a direction in which the communication apparatus faces, a measurement unit that measures signal strength indicating strength of a radio wave received by the communication apparatus, a notification unit that notifies a user of the signal strength falling below a first threshold, and a display unit that superimposes a direction in which the signal strength exceeds a second threshold, as first display, on second display being displayed. A laser printer capable of printing on a strip of fan fold paper includes a photosensitized drum for generating thereon a toner image to be transferred to the surface of the paper strip. The drum is associated with tractor assemblies operable in synchronism with the speed of the drum so as to determine travel speed of the paper strip passing by the drum. The laser printer further includes a fixing unit having a pair of fixing rollers for pressing the paper strip therebetween and a roller drive mechanism to drive the fixing rollers so as to determine travel speed of the paper strip passing through the fixing unit. A tension unit is disposed between the drum and the fixing unit for applying a tension to and thereby taking up slack of such portion of the paper strip that runs between the drum and the fixing unit. The tension unit includes a tensioning plate supported for pivotal motion and a helical tension spring for urging the tensioning plate. A sensing mechanism senses displacement of the tensioning plate. A control unit controls speed of the fixing rollers in an attempt to maintain displacement of the tensioning plate substantially at a desired level. The tension unit further includes an adjustment device for adjustment in the urging force to be applied by the spring to the tensioning plate.

The object of the present invention is to present an acoustooptical modulator without ripples in its wavelength loss characteristics. In order to achieve this objective, the present invention provides an acoustooptical body 8 having a piezoelectric vibrator supplying, for example, ultrasonic vibration, to modulate the incident optical signal, an acoustooptical medium rotated 90.degree. on the crystal axis of the acoustooptical medium upon which the optical signal emitted from acoustooptical medium is incident, and eliminates the polarization mode scattering caused the birefringence of both acoustooptical medium and acoustooptical medium.

A printer has one or more fans in the vicinity of a fixing device to blow air directly onto a continuous form when printing is stopped and when rollers in the fixing device are separated. The fan or fans can be provided on a pressure roller side of the continuous form, in which case the continuous form shields a heat roller from the air flow of the fans. In the alternative, the fan or fans can be on the heat roller side, in which case a shield extending along the circumference of the heat roller, duct, or both is used to protect the heat roller from the air flow and/or the continuous form from direct heat radiation. A pair of rollers are disposed downstream of the fixing device and are rotated while the continuous form is stopped so as to maintain tension on the continuous form.

Sheet drying prevention device

A fixing unit, used for fixing images on a recording sheet, includes a heat roller accommodating a heater, and a press roller movable between a retracted position and an operating position. The heat roller is rotated by a driving mechanism. A moving mechanism opens and closes a gap between the press roller and the heat roller by moving the press roller between the retracted position and the operating position. An assist gear rotates the press roller in a predetermined direction when the opening/closing mechanism moves the press roller toward the operating position.

Fixing unit

A fixing unit includes a heat roller accommodating a heater and a press roller movable toward and away from the heat roller. Both shaft members of the heat roller are supported by two receiving members, with a clearance provided between each shaft member and respective receiving member. A driven gear is provided to one of the shaft member, which engages a rotating mechanism for rotating the heat roller. The fixing unit further includes a biasing member which biases the other shaft of the heat roller away from the press roller within the clearance, in such a manner that the heat roller and the press roller become parallel when the above-described one shaft member is urged away from the press roller due to the meshing engagement of the driven gear and the rotating mechanism.

A fixing unit includes a heat roller accommodating a heater and a press roller movable between an operating position in which the recording sheet is nipped by the rollers and a retracted position. A driven gear is provided to one axial end of heat roller, which engages a rotating mechanism for rotating the heat roller. An opening/closing mechanism is arranged to move a first axial end (at the same side as the driven gear of the heat roller) of said press roller to said operating position before moving a second axial end of the press roller to the operating position.

A measuring apparatus and a method of operation are presented for rapid and accurate determination of the performance parameters of an optical fiber amplifier. The apparatus primarily includes an optical fiber path 2 having an acousto-optical modulator 3 for modulating reference light and an optical switching device 11 for enabling to bypass the modulator 3, to supply reference light to an optical coupler 5 which divides the reference light into first and second signals. The measuring technique involves: a first step of bypassing the modulator 3 to measure the power level of the second optical signal with an optical powermeter 10; a second step of measuring the power level of the modulated reference light, and then selecting a second optical signal with an optical switch 7 for modulation in another acousto-optical modulator 8, and measuring its output signal; a third step of bypassing the modulator 3 so as to measure the output signal from the modulator 8 with an optical spectrum analyzer 9; a fourth step of measuring the power level of the modulated reference light; and a fifth step of computing a difference between the measured results in steps 1 and 3 to obtain an adjustment value for the reference light, and computing a difference between the measured results in steps 2 and 4 to obtain an adjustment value for the modulated light.

Measuring apparatus for optical fiber amplifier and adjustment method

A motion-absorbing region is formed in a continuous form, and a passively rotatable fixing roller is moved into contact with the continuous form when the motion-absorbing region is formed. The motion-absorbing region absorbs the difference in relative speed between the fixing roller and the continuous form, keeping the difference or delay from being transmitted along the form to the region where a toner image is applied to the form. The electrophotographic transfer of the image to the continuous form is started before the pressure roller is moved into contact with the continuous form. The motion-absorbing region can be a slack region formed by feeding the form while the form is not under tension, or a resilient region formed by applying a resilient biasing device to the form while the form is under tension.

A temperature controlling device for an electrophotographic imaging device which has a fixing unit including a heat roller, the fixing unit performing a fixing operation in which toner is fixed on a recording sheet. The temperature controlling device includes a temperature sensing system, arranged about an outer surface of the heat roller such that, for the purpose of temperature measurement, the heat roller is divided into a plurality of areas along a rotational axis of the heat roller, and a temperature of each area is detected by the temperature sensing system; an air blowing system which blows air to each of the plurality of areas separately; and a controller which controls the air blowing system to blow air in accordance with temperatures of the plurality of areas in order to prevent overheating of any portions of the heat roller.
