A light source sectionincludes a red light source, a green light source, and a blue light source, and one frame period is divided into four subfield periods. Light sources of each color respectively emit light in blue, green, and red subfield periods, and the red light sourceand the green light sourceemit light in a yellow subfield period. Light emission intensity of the blue light sourcein the blue subfield period is set to twice light emission intensities of the red light sourceand the green light sourcein other subfield periods. Color breakup is reduced by displaying the yellow subfield, and light utilization efficiency improved by setting transmittance of a light modulation elementto 100% when a white signal by which each gradation of red, green, and blue becomes maximum is input. With this, a field sequential type display device which can reduce color breakup and has high light utilization efficiency is provided.

Field sequential type display device and display method

A field-sequential color image display device is provided which can sufficiently reduce power consumption while suppressing color breakup. In a liquid crystal display device that displays a color image under a field sequential system in which each frame period includes four field periods corresponding to three primary colors, namely red, green, and blue, and a white color, the emission intensity of a light source section () during the white field period is determined in advance so that the white color is displayed at a target maximum luminance when the transmittance of a pixel array section () is at its maximum during all of the four field periods. A drive control section () separates an input image signal into white, blue, green, and red components, expands the white component, and then assigns the components to the four field periods. This causes the pixel array section () to, during the respective field periods, display images of the corresponding colors based on the signal components thus assigned, giving a color image by an additive color mixture over time.

Colour image display device, and colour image display method

A display device includes a display unit having a function of showing a space behind a display screen transparently and a control unit for controlling the display unit based on an input video signal. The control unit controls the display unit to display a transparent video having a transparent portion through which the space behind the display screen can be seen transparently, while displaying a main video based on the input video signal. The control unit may generate an instruction signal indicating a display period of the transparent video and may control the display unit in accordance with the generated instruction signal, or may control the display unit in accordance with an instruction signal provided externally. With this, there is provided a see-through type display device which does not hinder a vision when displaying a video for a long time.

Provided is an image display device equipped with a see-through display function allowing the background to be seen through. In a liquid crystal display device (), a transparent plate () is attached such that the incidence angle of source light emitted by a backlight source () is Brewster's angle &#x3b8;b, and therefore, the transparent plate () reflects S-wave included in the source light, and allows P-wave included in ambient light incident from the back side to be transmitted therethrough and illuminate a liquid crystal panel (). Thus, when the backlight source () is on, the viewer can see an image displayed on the background, whereas when the backlight source () is off, only the background can be seen.

Image display device

There is provided an image display device that includes a display in which a background is transparently seen from a front surface side, and has a high degree of freedom at the time of installation. A liquid crystal panel () for adjusting transparency/light-emission adjusts, for each pixel, a ratio between transmitted light-source light and ambient light by respectively controlling a polarization direction of a reflected polarization component of the light-source light irradiated to a reflection-type polarization plate () from a light guide plate () and a polarization direction of a transmitted polarization component of the ambient light incident to the reflection-type polarization plate () from a rear surface side of the display, based on transparent/light-emitting pixel information. Accordingly, when the image display device is viewed from the front surface side of the display, an image is seen for each pixel, a background is transparently seen, or the background is seen so as to be superimposed on the image. Since it is not necessary to attach the image display device to a case filled with light, the image display device is widely used without limitation of use.

An image display apparatus operates in field sequence mode which effectively reduces the generation of color break. A color break strength calculating unit determines a color break strength that indicates the noticeability of the generation of the color break. A light-source signal generating unit controls each light source so that as the color break strength of a color mixed component having the highest color break strength is higher, the color mixed component is contained more in light output from a light-source unit during the extension subframe period. If there is present a first pixel region as an area including one or more pixel formation regions where an image containing the component of interest is displayed, the color break strength of the component of interest increases more as a magnitude of the component of interest is larger in the first pixel region.

Image display apparatus and image display method

In a display signal generator for use in a display device, in order to display the image corresponding to the input image signals, a combination of desired display time aperture ratios are obtained for each pixel in N number of sub-frame phases, a combination of display time aperture ratios in the N number of sub-frame phases at the time the display color is actually reproduced is set from the combination of the desired time aperture ratios on the basis of response characteristics of a pixel array unit, and a modulation signal which implements the combination of display time aperture ratios that were set is output.

The present invention aims to provide a display device capable of displaying an image in a color maintaining a hue and a tone expected from an input signal. In a field-sequential liquid crystal display device, when a red image is displayed, red light is transmitted in the first subframe period, and further, green light and blue light are transmitted in the second and third subframe periods, respectively. Therefore, the blue component of an input signal is adjusted such that the transmittance of the liquid crystal panel is at a predetermined value even in the third subframe period. As a result, the hue of an image displayed on the liquid crystal panel is the same as or almost the same as the hue of red expected from the input signal. Moreover, the color of red displayed on the liquid crystal panel maintains the tone value of the color expected from the input signal.

A driving device of a embodiment of the invention for driving a pixel array section includes a generation device (weighted average calculation section) for generating pixel values of driving signals of at least one color for pixels of the at least one color among driving signals of colors to be supplied sequentially to the pixel array section, the generation device being configured to generate the pixel values for each pixel of the at least one color on (i) a pixel value of the pixel in a current frame of the color of the pixel and (ii) a pixel value of the pixel in a previous of the same. This makes it possible to create a subframe appropriate in display position and luminance, thereby realizing an image display signal device, driving method, image display device, television receiver, and display monitor device, in which color breaking is effectively alleviated.

In one embodiment of the present invention, an image displaying period of a 1subframe of an Nframe is partially overlapped with an image displaying period of a 2subframe of the Nframe and an image displaying period of a 2subframe of an (N&#x2212;1)frame. For each of the subframes, a period of writing a pixel voltage into all horizontal lines in a display screen equals an image signal input period for inputting a single frame of the image signal. A control section divides a single frame so that a ratio of a period corresponding to a latter sub-frame and a period corresponding to a former sub-frame ranges from 1:3 to 1:7. A divisional point of the frame is a point which allows each of the latter sub-frame and the former sub-frame to minimize a difference between an actual brightness and an expected brightness. The frame may thus be divided at the point where the difference is largest in the normal hold display, so that it is possible to minimize the difference at this point. On this account, it is possible to reduce the difference in a single frame substantially by half as compared with an arrangement for carrying out the normal hold display, and thereby suppress the excess brightness caused by the difference.
