A method for producing a carbonic ester, comprising: (1) performing a reaction between an organometal compound mixture and carbon dioxide, the organometal compound mixture comprising a reactive organometal compound and an unregenerable unreactive compound derived from the reactive organometal compound, to thereby obtain a reaction mixture containing a carbonic ester, the unregenerable unreactive compound, and a regenerable metamorphic organometal compound derived from the reactive organometal compound, (2) separating the reaction mixture into a first portion containing the carbonic ester and the unregenerable unreactive compound, and a second portion containing the regenerable metamorphic organometal compound, and (3) reacting the second portion of the reaction mixture with an alcohol to form an organometal compound mixture and water and removing the water from the organometal compound mixture, the organometal compound mixture comprising a reactive organometal compound and an unregenerable unreactive compound derived from the reactive organometal compound.

A novel propylene glycol cyclohexyl ether derivative represented by formula I is disclosed. ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 represents a straight or branched alkyl group having 1 to 6 carbon atoms, or a cycloalkyl group having 3 to 6 carbon atoms; R.sup.2 represents a hydrogen atom or a hydroxyl group; and n represents an integer of from 1 to 3. This propylene glycol cyclohexyl ether derivative is not only extremely safe by virtue of its low toxicity and high flash point, but also has excellent detergency, low viscosity, and can impart a high film-forming ability to a resin emulsion. Further, this propylene glycol cyclohexyl ether derivative also has high hydrophobicity (and hence low water-solubility), so that it can minimize the cost and labor for disposal of waste water. Therefore, this propylene glycol cyclohexyl ether derivative is useful in various applications, for example, as a detergent, as a solvent for a wide variety of applications and as a film-forming agent.

A process for producing a diphenylmethane dicarbamate by reacting an N-phenylcarbamate with a methylenating agent is disclosed. The process is carried out by condensing N-phenylcarbamate in two steps using a combination of two different types of acid catalysts. The catalysts exhibit a strong catalyzing effect and yet can be readily separated from the reaction mixture. The process produces dineuclear diphenylmethane dicarbamates in high selectivity. The acid catalysts can be easily recovered from the reaction mixtures and put to another use.

Manufacture of a diphenylmethane diisocyanate for an N-phenylcarbamate is economically accomplished in high yield with high selectivity by a method which comprises (A) a process of methylenation for the formation of a condensation product containing at lest 80 mol % of a dinuclear diphenylmethane dicarbamate by the steps of (1) causing a methylenating agent to react upon at least 2 moles of an N-phenylcarbamate, based on 1 mole of the methylene group of said methylenating agent, in a liquid phase in the presence of an aqueous inorganic acid solution, (2) separating the resultant reaction mixture into the aqueous inorganic acid solution and an organic phase reaction mixture containing substantially none of said inorganic acid, and (3) subsequently treating said organic phase reaction mixture in the presence of an N-phenylcarbamate and a carboxylic acid having a pKa of not more than 4 in an aqueous solution at a temperature of 25.degree. C. or a solid acid or an acid consisting of said two acids thereby converting a reaction intermediate possessing a methylene-amino bond and contained in said organic phase reaction mixture to a diphenylmethane dicarbamate, and (B) a process of thermal decomposition described herein.
