A method of manufacturing an electrode includes a step of preparing a granulated material containing an electrode active material, a binder, and a solvent, a step of compressing the granulated material between a pair of rolls, to form an electrode composite layer, and a step of placing the electrode composite layer on an electrode current collector. At least one of the pair of rolls has a temperature of 40° C. or higher.

A negative electrode using a binding agent excellent in binding property, the negative electrode being capable of using water as an alternative solvent to an organic solvent during production of the negative electrode. An electrode material containing active material powder is prepared. Dry classification of the electrode material is performed by a classifier. An electrode is manufactured by using the electrode material subjected to the dry classification. The classifier includes a mesh screen, a blade, and a motor. Breakage of the mesh screen is detected by monitoring either or both of an operation sound of the classifier and torque of the motor. The electrode material contained in the classifier will no longer be used for manufacturing of the electrode when breakage of the mesh screen is detected.

Provided is a negative electrode for a nonaqueous secondary battery which achieves both suppression of reductive decomposition of an electrolyte or an electrolytic solution and suppression of an increase in resistance. Also provided are a method for producing such a negative electrode and a nonaqueous secondary battery employing such a negative electrode. A polymer coating layer is formed so as to coat at least part of surfaces of negative electrode active material particles containing silicon oxide (SiO; 0.5&#x2266;x&#x2266;1.6). The polymer coating layer contains a cationic polymer having a positive zeta potential under neutral conditions. Since silicon oxide has a negative zeta potential, a thin uniform coating layer can be formed owing to Coulomb's force.
