Provided is a method for manufacturing a nozzle plate which has a through hole having an ejection port. In the method, the through hole, which has one opening as an ejection port for ejecting the liquid, is arranged on a Si substrate by an anisotropic etching method wherein etching and side wall protection film formation are alternately repeated to the Si substrate and the following steps are performed in the following order; forming a film to be an etching mask on a surface of the Si substrate whereupon the ejection port is to be formed, forming the etching mask pattern having an opening for forming the thorough hole by performing photolithography and etching to a film to be the etching mask, and performing the etching by the anisotropic etching method by satisfying the conditional expression.

An SIM (solid immersion mirror) made principally of a light-permeable high-refractive-index medium has a lower surface which is produced by rotating a parabola about a symmetry axis, and an upper surface which is a perpendicular bisector surface of a line segment connecting the vertex and the focus of the parabola. The upper surface has the property of transmitting collimated light incident in a direction perpendicular thereto and reflecting the light reflected from the lower surface. Such a structure of the SIM facilitates the design of the upper surface and the lower surface both of which are reflecting surfaces, and allows the light to be incident on a light focusing point uniformly from therearound, thereby to form a proper light spot at the light focusing point. Additionally, the SIM allows the light to enter the medium through the entire upper surface, to achieve effective use of light.

Near-field light is generated from a fine opening formed in a silicon substrate to thereby record information on a recording layer of a recording medium. When the information is read out, reflected light from the recording layer is detected by a photodiode. The photodiode is formed by providing a boron-implanted layer around the fine opening in the silicon substrate. The detection signal of the reflected light is derived from the electrode. By this photodiode, the reflected light for reading is efficiently detected.
