Provided are a sizing agent coated carbon fiber bundle that has excellent mechanical characteristics when used as a carbon fiber reinforced composite material, as well as excellent ease of handling; a method for manufacturing the same; and a prepreg and carbon fiber reinforced composite material of excellent mechanical characteristics, employing the fiber bundle. The carbon fiber bundle is coated with a sizing agent that includes a polyether aliphatic epoxy compound having two or more epoxy groups per molecule and/or a polyol aliphatic epoxy compound or a non-water-soluble compound having a glass transition temperature of &#x2212;100-50&#xb0; C., wherein the sizing agent coated carbon fiber bundle is characterized in that the flatness ratio (width/thickness) of the carbon fiber bundle cross section is 10-150, and a two edge part/center part sizing agent deposition ratio, obtained by dividing the carbon fiber bundle in the width direction along the fiber direction into three equal parts by mass, and computing the ratio from the ratio of the mass of the sizing agent to the mass of the carbon fiber bundle in the center part and in both end parts, is 1.05-1.5.

Sizing agent coated carbon fiber bundle, method for manufacturing same, prepreg, and carbon fiber reinforced composite material

A prepreg includes; sizing agent-coated carbon fibers coated with a sizing agent; and a thermosetting resin composition impregnated into the sizing agent-coated carbon fibers. The sizing agent includes an aliphatic epoxy compound (A) and an aromatic compound (B) at least containing an aromatic epoxy compound (B1). The thermosetting resin composition includes a thermosetting resin (D) and a latent hardener (E), and optionally includes an additive (F) other than the thermosetting resin (D) and the latent hardener (E). The (a)/(b) ratio is within a predetermined range where (a) is the height of a component at a binding energy assigned to CHx, C&#x2014;C, and C&#x2550;C and (b) is the height of a component at a binding energy assigned to C&#x2014;O in a Ccore spectrum of the surfaces of the sizing agent-coated carbon fibers analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.

Sizing agent coated carbon fibers obtained by coating carbon fibers with a sizing agent comprising at least one of (A) to (C) in a total amount of 80 mass % or more with respect to the whole sizing agent, the carbon fibers each having a surface layer which has a thickness of 10 nm or larger and has an oxygen content of 4% or higher with respect to all the elements, wherein when the sizing agent coated carbon fibers are subjected three times to a 10-minute ultrasonic treatment in an acetone solvent, then the amount of the remaining sizing agent is 0.1-0.25 parts by mass per 100 parts by mass of the sizing agent coated carbon fibers. Sizing agent-coated carbon fibers, process for producing sizing agent-coated carbon fibers, prepreg, and carbon fiber reinforced composite material

Provided are tubular carbon fiber reinforced composite material and having excellent cylindrical bending strength and a golf club shaft using the same. This tubular carbon fiber reinforced composite material is formed by laminating and curing a straight layer and a bias layer. The straight layer comprises carbon fibers S coated with a sizing agent S and arranged in parallel in a direction of &#x2212;20&#xb0; to +20&#xb0; with respect to the axis of the tubular body, and contains a thermosetting resin S. The bias layer comprises carbon fibers B coated with a sizing agent B and arranged in parallel in a direction of +25&#xb0; to +65&#xb0; with respect to the axis of the tubular body, and contains a thermosetting resin B. The carbon fiber reinforced composite material constituting the bias layer has an interlaminar shear strength of not less than 110 MPa. A cured product of the thermosetting resin S has an elastic modulus of not less than 4.0 GPa.

Prepreg and carbon fiber reinforced composite material

A prepreg includes; agent-coated carbon fibers coated with a sizing agent; and a thermosetting resin composition impregnated into the sizing agent-coated carbon fibers. The sizing agent includes an aliphatic epoxy compound (A) and an aromatic epoxy compound (B1). The sizing agent-coated carbon fibers are in a shape of woven fabric or braid. The thermosetting resin composition includes a thermosetting resin (D), a thermoplastic resin (F), and a latent hardener (G). The sizing agent-coated carbon fibers have an (a)/(b) ratio in a certain range where (a) is the height of a component at a binding energy assigned to CHx, C&#x2014;C, and C&#x2550;C and (b) is the height of a component at a binding energy assigned to C&#x2014;O in a Ccore spectrum of the surfaces of the sizing agent-coated carbon fibers analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.

A sizing agent-coated carbon fiber bundle has a sizing agent containing an aliphatic epoxy compound (C) and an aromatic epoxy compound (D) coated on the carbon fiber bundle, wherein the carbon fiber in the carbon fiber bundle is the one which exhibits, when measured by single-fiber composite fragmentation method, a number of fiber breaks of at least 2.0/mm when apparent single-fiber stress is 15.3 GPa and the number of fiber breaks of up to 1.7/mm when the apparent single-fiber stress is 12.2 GPa.
