A dichroic film formed on a prism base member contains 10% by volume or more of a high-thermal-conductivity substance having a thermal conductivity of 20 W/mK or more at a temperature of 300 K. Preferably, the dichroic film is composed of high- and low-refractive-index layers laid alternately on one another, and the low-refractive-index layers contain 20% by volume or more of the high-thermal-conductivity substance. For lower angle-of-incidence dependence and higher light use efficiency, preferably, the following conditions: N&#x2267;1.58 and N/N&#x2267;1.33, where Nrepresents the refractive index of the low-refractive-index layers, and Nrepresents the refractive index of the high-refractive-index layers.

An optical element for reflecting light has a substrate and a thin film formed on the substrate. An optical element has a dichroic film held between transparent materials which transmits one of first light in a wavelength range of 390 to 425 nm and second light in a wavelength range of 630 to 820 nm and reflects the other light, and a first, a second, a third and a fourth surfaces. The transmissivity of the polarized light p does not decrease and the reflectivity of the polarized light s is nearly 100% with respect to even a broad angle region.

A projection optical system has three LCLVs; a first color-separating mirror for separating a substantially polarized light into a first and second color lights and a third color light; a half-wave plate for rotating the polarization direction of either one(s) of the separated light; a second color-separating mirror for synthesizing the first and the third color light, and further, separating the second color light; a first PBS for separating the first and third color lights and illuminating the first and third LCLVs, respectively, and synthesizing image lights from the first and third LCLVs; a second PBS for illuminating the second LCLV and emitting a image light modulated by the second LCLV; a half-wave plate disposed external to output surface of the first PBS; and a third PBS for synthesizing three image lights, the third PBS has a dicroic characteristics and a polarization characteristics.
