A liquid crystal display device includes a liquid crystal display panel having a liquid crystal layer sandwiched between a pair of transparent substrates, at least one of which has patterned electrodes on an inner surface thereof, and a backlight disposed behind the liquid crystal display panel. The backlight has at least one discharge tube including a sealed-off transparent tube, a phosphor film formed on an inner surface of the sealed-off transparent tube, and a discharge gas within the sealed-off transparent tube and plural electrodes spaced in a direction of an axis of the sealed-off transparent tube and positioned at least partially around a circumference of the sealed-off transparent tube. At least two adjacent ones of the plural electrodes is supplied with alternating voltages different in frequency from each other, respectively.

Liquid crystal display device having an improved backlight

A liquid crystal display includes a liquid crystal display panel for modulating light to form an image, and a back light unit having a plurality of lamp tubes with outside electrodes and without inside electrodes. Each of the plurality of lamp tubes has a first outside electrode disposed at one end portion and a second outside electrode disposed at another end portion. The first outside electrode which is disposed at one of the plurality of lamp tubes is electrically connected with the first outside electrode disposed at an adjacent another of the plurality of lamp tubes by a conductive member, and the second outside electrode which is disposed at the one of said plurality of lamp tubes is electrically connected with the second outside electrode disposed at the adjacent another of the plurality of lamp tubes by a conductive member.

Liquid crystal display

A liquid crystal display device includes a liquid crystal display panel and a backlight disposed behind the liquid crystal display panel. The backlight includes: a light source including a discharge tube having no electrodes therein, and first and second electrodes disposed outside the discharge tube; and a power source which supplies first and second high-frequency voltages to the first and second electrodes, respectively. The first and second electrodes are disposed at two ends of the discharge tube in a direction of a longitudinal axis thereof, respectively. A length of a first wiring for coupling the power source to the first electrode is approximately equal to a length of a second wiring for coupling the power source to the second electrode.

A liquid crystal display includes a liquid crystal display panel which has first and second drain lines groups, a control circuit board which has a control unit, a first and second drain drivers groups connected to the corresponding first and second drain lines groups, a back light unit, a metal frame, and a shield member which shields against EMI. Both of the first and second drain drivers groups are arranged at a same peripheral side of the liquid crystal display panel. The control unit supplies first and second signals to the drain drivers groups via flexible printed circuits which are connected to the control circuit board. The control circuit board is sandwiched between the metal frame and the shield member, and the metal frame is arranged between the control circuit board and the liquid crystal display panel.

The invention provides for a method and display apparatus () having driving circuitry for driving a display panel () having a plurality of addressable discharge cells () driven by display pulses (DP), including the steps of applying data pulses (DAP) during the time interval between display pulses (DP) and characterized by the step of priming charges for each of the discharge cells () by means of the reset discharges so as to reduce the required data voltage, and in particular such a method wherein one TV-field period (T) is divided into a plurality of sub-fields (SF) all of which are of substantially equal time durations.

Method and apparatus for driving a display panel

A liquid crystal display having a liquid crystal display panel for modulating light to form an image and a back light unit having a plurality of lamp tubes without inside electrodes and which are discharged by outside electrodes disposed along an outer surface of the at least one lamp tube, the back light unit being disposed behind the liquid crystal display panel. One outside electrode disposed at the at least one of the plurality of lamp tubes is electrically connected with another outside electrode disposed at an another adjacent lamp tube.

A method of driving a display device assumes a specific pixel on a retina that is formed on the retina based on an input image, and controls light emission of each subframe such that luminance of a specific pixel on the retina becomes substantially equal to luminance of a pixel corresponding to the input image. The display device is driven by constructing one frame with a plurality of subframes, for displaying the input image that moves on a display panel.

Method of driving display device capable of achieving display of images in higher precision without changing conventional specifications of panel

A method of driving a plasma display panel having front and rear substrates disposed opposite each other, parallel X and Y electrode lines formed between the front and rear substrates, and address electrode lines formed orthogonal to the X and Y electrode lines to define corresponding discharge cells at interconnections, the X electrode lines are in X groups, and the Y electrode lines are in Y groups, where no two adjacent pairs of adjacent X and Y electrode lines belong to the same pair of X and Y groups. The X and Y electrode lines of the respective X and Y groups are commonly connected to be driven, and at least first and second subfields are driven in an overlapping manner for displaying gray scales during a unit display period. The method includes a scan step, an address step, a display step, a second driving step, and a repetition step.

Method of driving plasma display panel

A halftone display method utilizes an activation sequence, having a plurality of luminance blocks predefined in each frame or field to display an image and having redundancy, that enables one gray-scale level to be expressed by any one of a plurality of combinations of subframes (luminance blocks). When determining luminance blocks for use to display gray scale of an arbitrary first pixel, the luminance blocks to be used for the first pixel are selected in accordance with a predetermined rule, based on how the luminance blocks are used for a second pixel located in close proximity to the first pixel. In this way, by actively utilizing the redundancy of the activation sequence, the occurrence of moving-image false contours (false color contours) in video can be minimized, and also a motion compensation equalizing pulse method can be effectively applied to further improve the image display quality.

Halftone display method and display apparatus for reducing halftone disturbances occurring in moving image portions

A liquid crystal display is formed by a liquid crystal display panel for modulating light to form an image, and a back light unit including a lamp tube which is discharged by an electrode and is disposed behind said liquid crystal display panel, wherein said electrode is formed outside of said lamp tube. In this way, the liquid crystal display unit has a life span which can be increased without the need to replace the lamp tube or the back light unit.

In order to operate a discharge apparatus, a first voltage having a first frequency is applied to electrodes. Moreover, a second voltage having a second frequency higher than the first frequency is applied to the first voltage. The waveform of the voltage having the second frequency may be an attenuated one which is synchronized with the first frequency. As a result of this voltage superposition, the electrons, ions, or plasma in the already established discharge fluctuate with the change in the electric field. If the second frequency is selected to be equal or close to the resonance frequency of the electrons, ions, or plasma existing in the already established discharge, there occurs the resonance phenomenon of the electrons, ions, or plasma. This phenomenon raises the temperature of those particles. As a result, the electron temperature approaches to a value preferable for emission of visible light or ultraviolet rays so that the luminous efficiency is improved.
