A driving method of a plasma display device, the plasma display device having a plurality of first and second electrodes disposed adjacent to each other and a plurality of third electrodes disposed so as to intersect with the first and second electrodes, the driving method includes providing a reset period, an address period and a sustain discharge period for driving of the plasma display device, applying to the second electrode in the reset period a voltage with a waveform in which an applied voltage value increases with time, shortening a sustain time of achieved potential of the voltage with the waveform when a first display ratio of an input video signal is low as compared with a second display ratio which is higher than the first display ratio.

Sustain pulses are alternately applied to a pair of display electrodes of discharge cells provided in a plasma display panel (PDP) to generate a sustain discharge to display an image on the PDP. The sustain pulses include two-crests discharge voltage waveforms having a first maximum and second maximum values, in which discharges are generated twice in a half cycle. After applying a sustain pulse having a one-crest discharge voltage waveform to a pair of display electrodes, a predetermined number of sustain pulses of two-crests discharge voltage waveforms are consecutively applied. A time, from applying a second sustain pulse of a two-crests discharge voltage waveform to clamping a voltage of the second sustain pulse to the second maximum value, is made longer than a time, from applying a first sustain pulse of a two-crests discharge voltage waveform to clamping a voltage of the first sustain pulse to the second maximum value.

Driving method for plasma display panel and plasma display device

A problem is to be solved that there is to be provided a plasma display device capable of generating driving signals with less variation in delay time and without carrying out any phase adjustment. There is provided a plasma display device including; a first display electrode; a second display electrode adapted to cause a discharge to occur between the first display electrode and the second display electrode; a first display electrode drive circuit for applying a discharge voltage to the first display electrode; and a second display electrode drive circuit for applying a discharge voltage to the second display electrode. The first display electrode drive circuit has a first output element for supplying a first electric potential to the first display electrode in accordance with a first input signal which is inputted by using a transformer.

Plasma display device and capacitive load driving circuit

A method for driving a plasma display panel is provided in which wasteful power consumption is reduced and light emission efficiency is improved when the number of cells to be lighted is relatively small. The method includes classifying a display ratio into plural group ranges, selecting a suitable display pulse waveform for each group range, detecting the display ratio of an object to be displayed in a real display, and plural types of display pulses having different waveforms are used differently in accordance with the result of the detection. The display ratio means a ratio of the number of cells to be lighted to the number of cells of the screen.

A technique which enables improvement of luminance and reduction of consumption power in a sustain discharge driving of a four-electrode structure PDP, particularly, by devising driving method to Z electrodes. In this plasma display device, a sustain discharge by a method to apply a narrow pulse to the Z electrode and a method to apply a fixed potential to the Z electrode are switched according to a judgment of range of display load ratio in driving sustain discharge from a controller and driver to the PDP and used.

In a conventional method of driving a plasma display panel, for example, an auxiliary discharge is executed between an A electrode and a Y electrode to improve light-emission efficiency of a display discharge. However, since a phosphor layer is present between the A electrode and the Y electrode, the phosphor layer is exposed to a discharge, whereby there is a problem that its characteristic deteriorates. A method of driving a plasma display panel having a structure, in which at least three display electrodes X, Y, and Z used for a display discharge are provided to a display cell and no phosphor layer is formed between said display electrodes and a discharge space, the method comprising the steps of: varying a potential of at least one display electrode Z of said display electrodes during said display discharge; and making a potential of said at least one display electrode Z at a time of starting said display discharge different from that at a time of ending said display discharge.

Plasma display panel driving method and plasma display apparatus

There is provided a drive circuit of a display device using a capacitive load which includes a clamp circuit connected to a power source potential and clamping a potential of the capacitive load to the power source potential such that an electric power is supplied to the capacitive load in a temporally dispersed manner. For example, the clamp circuit includes a plurality of switches parallelly connected between the capacitive load and the power source potential, the plurality of switches being turned on at different times.

There is provided a plasma display device capable of high luminous efficacy and stable driving for displaying images at various image display load factors. The plasma display device performs the sustain discharge for a light-emission display, and is configured to apply a sustain pulse voltage between a sustain electrode pair in a respective one of the plural discharge cells to generate a sustain discharge in a respective one of the following operating modes selected based upon use of the plasma display device: (a) generating a pre-discharge and then a main discharge; (b) generating a main discharge without a pre-discharge preceding the main discharge; and (c) switching between the mode (a) and the mode (b). The sustain voltage waveforms are used which compensate for an increase in voltage drop due to an increase in discharge current when the image display load factor is excessively increased.

Plasma display device having improved luminous efficacy

A capacitive-load driving circuit has a configuration in which a driving power supply source is connected to an output terminal via a driving device. The capacitive-load driving circuit has a power distributing circuit inserted between the driving power supply source and the driving device. Therefore, temperature rise (power consumption) in the capacitive-load driving circuit can be distributed.

In conventional plasma display devices, reset by obtuse waves has been performed since discharge intensity becomes higher and background light emission is increased when reset by rectangular waves is performed. However, further improvement of the contrast to improve the image quality has been demanded. The present invention provides a driving method of a plasma display device using obtuse-wave reset in which sustain time of an achieved potential of the obtuse-wave reset is controlled in accordance with a display ratio of a video signal.
