A sliding member formed of a resinous material is in sliding contact with a steel member in an automotive internal combustion engine. The resinous material includes a thermoplastic resin composition which includes a fluororesin in an amount ranging from 5 to 40 parts by weight, and a thermoplastic resin other than the fluororesin, in an amount ranging from 95 to 60 parts by weight. The fluororesin contains crosslink formed between at least a part of carbon atoms forming part of a molecule chain of the fluororesin and at least a part of carbon atoms forming part another molecular chain of the fluororesin, and active end group formed at least a part of the molecule chain of the fluororesin.

A seal ring () of the present invention seals operating oil hermetically and is attached to an annular seal ring groove () provided on an outer circumference of a shaft member (). The seal ring () includes fluororesin, modified fluororesin formed by being irradiated with an ionizing radiation in a range from 1 kGy to 10 MGy inclusive in a state of being heated up to a melting point thereof or higher under an inert gas atmosphere with an oxygen partial pressure of 1.33 kPa or less, and synthetic resin having a surface energy ranging from +0 N/cm to 20&#x2dc;10&#x2212;5 N/cm inclusive of that of the operating oil.

Seal ring and seal device

A piston for an internal combustion engine of an automotive vehicle. The piston has a piston ring and a piston skirt section each of which has a sliding section in slidable contact with a cylinder bore section of a cylinder block in presence of a lubricating oil. The cylinder bore section is formed of eutectic or hyper-eutectic aluminum alloy. Additionally, a hard carbon thin film is coated on the sliding section of the piston and contains hydrogen atom in an amount of not more than 1 atomic %. Here, the lubricating oil contains at least one selected from the group consisting of ashless fatty acid ester friction modifier, ashless aliphatic amine friction modifier, polybutenyl succinimide, derivative of polybutenyl succinimide, zinc dithiophosphate, and derivative of zinc dithiophosphate.

Piston for internal combustion engine

A seal ring seals operating oil hermetically and is attached to an annular seal ring groove provided on an outer circumference of a shaft member. The seal ring comprises fluororesin, metal powder having a hardness equal to or more than that of any of a side surface of the seal ring groove serving as a sliding partner and an inner circumferential surface of a housing engaged relatively rotatable with the outer circumference of the shaft member, and modified fluororesin formed by irradiating an ionizing radiation in a range from 1 kGy to 10 MGy inclusive in a state of being heated up to a melting point thereof or higher under an inert gas atmosphere with an oxygen partial pressure of 1.33 kPa or less.
