A liquid crystal layer sandwiched by a lower substrateand an upper substrate comprises cross-shaped supports, a wall surface structure, and a seal member. The supportsare provided at the four sides of each pixel. Contiguous pixels are linked via openings between supports. The wall surface structure is provided in the periphery of the supports arranged in the form of a grid. The supports and the wall surface structure are a same member having adhesiveness. A portion of the wall surface structure is an inlet of liquid crystal. A seal member is provided at the perimeter of the wall surface structure. The liquid crystal poured from the inlet is poured into all of pixels via openings. A black matrix in the form of a grid, which covers the top side of all of the supports, is provided on the upper substrate.

A display apparatus includes a cholesteric liquid crystal display panel, a control circuit and a driving circuit. The control circuit classifies pixels into different gradation level groups. The driving circuit applies a first driving waveform to the cholesteric liquid crystal display panel to bring pixels belonging to the first and the fourth group into a state corresponding to the highest gradation level, pixels belonging to the second group into a state corresponding to the lowest gradation level, and pixels belonging to the third group into states corresponding to gradation levels to be displayed, and applies a second driving waveform to the cholesteric liquid crystal display panel to bring pixels belonging to the fourth group into states corresponding to gradation levels to be displayed.

In a display element using cholesteric liquid crystal, to enable a high-speed partial screen rewrite, a region not to be partially rewritten is scanned in high-speed mode within the tolerance of crosstalk of the liquid crystal, and a region to be partially rewritten is partially rewritten by being scanned at a normal speed within a rewritable range with an inexpensive universal driver. As a result, a high-speed rewrite only to an arbitrary particular region can be made even with an inexpensive universal driver IC.

The head has a nozzle member in which a plurality of nozzles are formed, a pressure chamber wall member in which a plurality of pressure chambers are formed, and piezoelectric type actuators that have a diaphragm and a plurality of piezo elements and apply pressure to each of the plurality of pressure chambers for ejecting ink from the nozzles. A coating member having high rigidity is provided on inner surfaces of the pressure chamber walls or on parts of the diaphragm in contact with the pressure chamber wall member, thus increasing the rigidity of the pressure chamber walls.
