A control device of modulating signal generates high-side signal and low-side signal. The high-side signal takes level in accordance with level of AC component of a monitor signal obtained by photoelectric conversion of modulated light, when the polarity of the AC component is positive, or its magnitude is zero. A light source error detection system and method including monitoring a plurality of characteristics of a light source and controlling the light source based on a plurality of monitored results. The system and method control the light source differently for a first case when only one of the monitored characteristics is abnormal than a second case when more than two of the monitored characteristics are abnormal. In controlling the light source, an output power of the light source is decreased with different time constant for the first case and the second case.

Light source error detection apparatus and method

Disclosed herein is a system including a first optical fiber transmission line, a plurality of second optical fiber transmission lines, a branching section for optically connecting these first and second optical fiber transmission lines, a monitor device optically connected to the first optical fiber transmission line, and a plurality of reflecting sections respectively provided in the vicinity of open ends of the second optical fiber transmission lines. The monitor device outputs monitor light through the first optical fiber transmission line and the branching section to each of the second optical fiber transmission lines. The reflecting sections reflect the monitor light to thereby generate identification optical signals having different patterns for respectively identifying the second optical fiber transmission lines. With this configuration, the monitor device can detect an abnormality in each of the second optical fiber transmission lines according to the presence of absence of the corresponding identification optical signal.

Method and system for monitoring of optical transmission lines

An optical network system for bidirectional transmission between a main system (e.g., central station) and a plurality of auxiliary systems (e.g., subscriber's stations). The main system outputs a main optical signal to a main fiber. The auxiliary systems output auxiliary optical signals to a plurality of auxiliary fibers, respectively. The main fiber and the auxiliary fibers are network-connected by a connecting unit. The main system has a detector for detecting the auxiliary optical signals and a control signal generator for generating a control signal including data for designating a specific auxiliary system whose auxiliary optical signal is not detected. The main optical signal in the auxiliary fiber corresponding to the specific auxiliary system is attenuated according to the control signal. Accordingly, laser hazard in each auxiliary system is prevented.

Optical network system

An optical beam splitting device which selectively disables a faulty output port to stop further emission of the optical beam therefrom. When an optical fiber cable is broken or a cable plug is disconnected, some part of the optical beam is reflected at the fiber end face that is left open. An optical sensing device, such as a photodiode, equipped in the beam splitting device receives this reflected light and transduces it into an electrical signal. A reflection detection controller examines this electrical signal and recognizes the presence of the back reflection if the electrical signal exceeds a predetermined reference level. The reflection detection controller then sends a beam control signal to an external modulator disposed at that faulty output port. With the beam control signal, the external modulator varies the intensity of the light beam so that only a limited power will be delivered to the faulty port where the back reflection is observed.
