A magnetic recording and reproduction method includes the steps of recording a plurality of tracks which make a unit for a signal process for data detection by means of a recording head on a magnetic recording medium, and reproducing signals of the plural tracks by a plural number of times in different positional relationships to the tracks by means of a reproduction head which can reproduce a signal across the plural tracks of the magnetic recording medium, collecting the reproduction signals in the unit and performing a signal process for the unit to produce reproduction signals for the individual tracks.

A magnetic recording/reproducing apparatus is disclosed wherein reproduced signals read out from a plurality of recording tracks using a reproducing head can be separated into original recording signals of the recording tracks. Upon recording, an identification signal which has a recording wavelength equal to or greater than a minimum recording wavelength and causes no interference of any of the recording tracks with any adjacent one of the recording tracks is appended to and recorded together with a recording signal in order to allow, upon reproduction, acquisition of the position information of the reproducing head with respect to the plural recording tracks of the magnetic recording medium. Upon reproduction, a reproduced signal for each of the recording tracks of the magnetic recording medium is generated on the basis of the positional information read from the recording tracks.

A rotary magnetic head unit has a non-contact type transmission device capable of reliably performing non-contact transmission both in signal and power supply systems and designed so as to be smaller in size. The non-contact type transmission device is formed of a rotating member and a fixed member each having a power supply wiring section for transmitting a power supply, a signal wiring section for transmitting a signal, and a crosstalk prevention section positioned between the power supply wiring section and the signal wiring section to prevent crosstalk between these sections. If a reproducing head formed of a magnetoresistive element is used by being supplied with a bias current from the power supply transmitted by the power supply wiring sections of the rotary and fixed members, the rotary magnetic head unit uses bias current control means section to change the bias current supplied to the reproducing head according to the amount of wear of the recording head during reproduction from signals from magnetic tapes.

A helical scan magnetic recording/reproducing apparatus incorporating an MR head to serve as a reproducing magnetic head is arranged to convert data which is recorded on a magnetic tape into data in the form of DC-free code trains. The magnetic recording/reproducing apparatus is provided with a high-pass filter for attenuating low-frequency components of a reproduced signal detected by the MR head. Moreover, a demodulating circuit is provided which demodulates data in a state before data is converted into the DC-free code trains from the reproduced signal, in which the low-frequency components have been attenuated by said high-pass filter. As a result, noise (thermal asperities) in a low-frequency region caused when the magnetic tape and the MR head are brought into contact with each other is removed so that a reproduced output free from excessive noise is obtained. The high-pass filter is, for example, a rotary transformer mounted on rotational drum.
