An electrode catalyst for a fuel cell, the electrode catalyst having high initial activity and being capable of long-term retention of said activity; and a fuel cell using the electrode catalyst for a fuel cell. The electrode catalyst for a fuel cell includes catalyst metal particles that include platinum or a platinum alloy, and carrier particles that carry said catalyst metal particles, wherein the carrier particles are a carbonaceous material having a cumulative pore volume of 0.10 cc/g or less in the diameter range of 2 nm or less, and a BET specific surface area of greater than 900 m/g; and a fuel cell comprising the electrode catalyst for a fuel cell.

Electrode catalyst for fuel cell, and fuel cell using same

An electrode catalyst and a method for producing the electrode catalyst are described, in which the electrode catalyst includes catalyst metal particles containing platinum or a platinum alloy, and carrier particles supporting the catalyst metal particles. The carrier particles are made of a carbonaceous material with a BET specific surface area of 700 m/g or more. The catalyst metal particles have an average particle size of 2.5 to 4.5 nm, and a standard deviation of the particle size of the catalyst metal particles is 1.30 nm or less. The electrode catalyst has a high initial activity and is able to maintain that activity over a long period of time.

An object of the present invention is to achieve both high initial performance and durability performance of a fuel cell. Such object can be achieved by using a fuel cell electrode catalyst that includes a solid carbon carrier and an alloy of platinum and cobalt supported on the carrier.

This invention relates to an electrode catalyst for a fuel cell comprising catalyst metal particles of noble metal-base metal-Ce (cerium) ternary alloy carried on carbon materials, wherein the noble metal is at least one member selected from among Pt, Ru, Rh, Pd, Ag and Au, the base metal is at least one member selected from among Ir, Co, Fe, Ni and Mn, and the relative proportion (i.e., the molar proportion) of noble metal:base metal:Ce (cerium) is 20 to 95:5 to 60:0.1 to 3. The electrode catalyst for a fuel cell inhibits deterioration of an electrolyte membrane or an electrolyte in an electrode catalyst layer, improves durability, and, in particular, improves the capacity for power generation in the high current density region.

A production process according to the present invention of an electrode catalyst for fuel cell is characterized in that: it includes: a dispersing step of dispersing a conductive support in a solution; a loading step of dropping a platinum-salt solution, a base-metal-salt solution and an iridium-salt solution to the resulting dispersion liquid, thereby loading respective metallic salts on the conductive support as hydroxides under an alkaline condition; and an alloying step of heating the conductive support with metallic hydroxides loaded in a reducing atmosphere to reduce them, thereby alloying them.

It is an object of the present invention to provide a cathode catalyst for fuel cells containing platinum and iron which can maintain the durability of a battery and can make a battery high output. The cathode catalyst for fuel cells comprises a supporting layer which consists of an alloy containing platinum and iron and further containing the third component which has an affinity for iron including one or more sorts of elements selected from the group consisting of tungsten, titanium, molybdenum, rhenium, zinc, manganese, tin, tantalum and rhodium, and a support on which the supporting layer is loaded. A catalyst using an alloy containing platinum and iron enables the batteries to become high output. By alloying one or more sorts of elements of the third component which has an affinity for iron with an alloy containing platinum and iron, it is possible to prevent eluting of the iron into the electrolyte.

Provided is a supported catalyst for a fuel cell, containing a conductive support and a platinum alloy supported thereby, wherein an elution ratio of transition metal other than platinum is 30% or less when 0.5 g of the supported catalyst is stirred at room temperature in 30 mL of 0.1N aqueous sulfuric acid solution for 800 hours.
