In a digital certificate management system, a client/server system is connected to a digital certificate management apparatus capable of communicating with clients and servers. Mutual authentication is performed between the clients and the servers by using digital certificates and communications are performed over a communication channel established based on mutual authentication. The digital certificate management apparatus includes a certification key update part updating a server certification key used for mutual authentication and stored in each of the clients that become communication parties of one of the servers. The certification key updating part includes a key obtaining part, a certificate obtaining part, and first and second transmission parts. The second transmission part performs an operation of transmitting the new server certificate to each of the servers after there are responses, indicating that the new server certification key is received, from all of the clients that become communication parties of the server.

A digital certificate management apparatus updates a proof key used for proving validity of a digital certificate used for authentication for establishing communication between a client and a server. The apparatus acquires a new proof key for updating, acquires a new digital certificate used for the authentication for which validity can be proved with the use of said new proof key, transmits the new proof key to the client and transmits a new server certificate which is a new digital certificate for the server to the server. The apparatus transmits the new server certificate to the server after receiving, from the client, information indicating that the client has received the new proof key.

A copying system is provided in which an image inputting unit and an image outputting unit are connected via a conventional data transmission path, and a copying operation is performed at the same speed as the conventional standalone copying machine. The image inputting unit has a first communicating unit, and the image outputting unit has a second communicating unit. Image data is transferred directly from the image inputting unit to the image outputting unit via the first communicating unit, the transmission path and the second communicating unit after a copying operation is initiated by a controlling unit. A scanning operation of the image inputting unit is performed in synchronization with an image forming operation performed by the image outputting unit.
