A user equipment (UE) in a communication system measures the power received in a bandwidth on possible downlink carriers in a frequency band that is supported by the UE in order to search for available carriers. Search times can be decreased on average by using a specially configured filter to process the received power measurements and then determining likely carriers based on the filtered values. Metrics from the filter can be used to indicate both where to perform cell search and where not to perform cell search.

Radio carrier identification methods and apparatus

A user equipment (UE) in a communication system can keep track of the cell/frequency deployment of a network operator preferred by the user, and based on the tracked information, the UE can build up its own user-specific Neighbor Cell List. When the UE is roaming, the UE does received-signal measurements according to cells and carrier frequencies identified in the broadcast Neighbor Cell Lists of the roamed-into network, but the UE also does received-signal measurements (with higher priority) according to the user-specific Neighbor Cell List that it has built up. Accordingly, a UE implementing a user-specific Neighbor Cell List analyzes its radio environment based on received signals and stores information about that environment, including user-preference information that prioritizes cells in the radio environment. The UE can then carry out cell search based on the stored environment and user-preference information.

Neighbor cell list compilation methods and apparatus

In a communication terminal implementing a radio link control (RLC) protocol, error propagation to higher layer protocols is mitigated by use of an additional length indicator, referred to herein as a new packet indicator, in the RLC data blocks to indicate the beginning of a new higher layer packet in addition to a conventional length indicator to indicate the last segment of a higher layer packet. The new packet indicator prevents the Logical Link Control (LLC) data segment at the beginning of an RLC data block from being concatenated with an LLC data segment in the previous data block even when length indicators in the previous data block are not received.
