An insect pest eradication system comprised of a non-lethal knockout agent and an insecticide. The present invention also relates to a method of eradicating insects, particularly those found in earthen colonies, by treating the insects with a non-lethal knockout agent, such as trans-dichloroethylene, in combination with a suitable insecticide for the targeted insects.

Incineration systems, particularly those using municipal garbage and waste, refuse-derived fuels, coal and petroleum coke, and/or chlorinated hydrocarbons are operated without the release of toxic pollutants such as dioxins. One preferred embodiment relates to a non-polluting method for burning fuel derived from typical municipal garbage and waste eliminating, or at least significantly reducing, the need for the landfill disposal of such waste materials. In an alternative application, air, water, coal and/or petroleum coke are used to produce electricity, urea, and methanol in a non-polluting manner.

A method for the integration of a manufacturing facility with a salt dome, which manufacturing facility is one for the production of high purity titanium dioxide using chlorine as a reactant. The metal chlorides produced as a by-product of titanium dioxide production are reacted with sodium hydroxide to produce metal hydroxide precipitates in an aqueous sodium chloride solution, which is then conducted into a reservoir of brine in a salt dome. The metal hydroxide precipitates are allowed to settle and the sodium chloride solution mixes with the brine. A portion of the brine is conducted to the surface where it is decomposed to produce chlorine, hydrogen, and sodium hydroxide. The chlorine and sodium hydroxide are recycled for use in the overall integrated process.

Manufacture of titanium dioxide with recycle of waste metal chloride stream

A closed-loop process for incinerating chlorinated hydrocarbon-containing material without the emission of air borne pollutants. The chlorinated hydrocarbon-containing material is incinerated, preferably in the substantial absence of air, thereby producing a gaseous effluent containing hydrogen chloride and pollutants such as carbon dioxide, acid gases, and halogenated compounds. The gaseous effluent is passed through a hydrogen chloride purification system to remove hydrogen chloride from the gaseous effluent and to produce a concentrated anhydrous hydrogen chloride gaseous stream. The gaseous effluent is passed through at least one sorbent bed, such as a bed of activated carbon, to remove halogenated pollutants from the effluent. The pollutants are desorbed from the one or more sorbent beds and recycled to the incinerator where they are decomposed by combustion.

1,1,1-Trichloroethane (viz., methylchloroform) and 1,1,2-trichloroethane are produced in the same reactor by feeding molecular chlorine and chloroethene (viz., vinyl chloride) as well as 1,1-dichloroethane to the reactor. The ratios at which the two trichloroethanes are produced can be easily controlled by controlling the relative ratios of 1,1-dichloroethane and chloroethene introduced to the reactor. The reactions are conducted in the liquid phase in the presence of free radical initiator.

Describes nonflammable organic solvent compositions comprising 1,2-dichloroethylene and a halocarbon different than 1,2-dichloroethylene. The 1,2-dichloroethylene consists essentially of trans-1,2-dichloroethylene, cis-1,2-dichloroethylene and mixtures thereof; preferably a major amount of trans-1,2-dichloroethylene; and in particular at least 99% by weight of trans-1,2-dichloroethylene, based on the total weight of 1,2-dichloroethylene. The halocarbon is selected from the group consisting of 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoroisopropanol, perfluoro-tert-butyl alcohol, 1,1,2,3,3-pentafluoropropane, 1-bromo-2-chloro-1,1,2-trifluoroethane, 1,2-dichloro-1,1,2,3,3,3-hexafluoropropane and mixtures thereof.
