A package having a corner indent wall includes a plurality of upstanding side walls including a first side wall, a front wall, a rear wall, a second side wall and an indent wall. The first side wall is contiguous with the front wall, the front wall is contiguous with the indent wall which is contiguous with the second side wall, the second side wall is contiguous with the rear wall and the rear wall is sealed to the first side wall. The package includes a sealed bottom wall formed from a plurality of bottom wall panels, each bottom wall panel adjacent a corresponding side wall. The package includes a gable top formed from a plurality of gable panels contiguous with their adjacent gable panels and their respective side walls and separated form their respective side walls by an upper crease line. The upper crease line is straight as separating two of the gable panels from their respective side walls and is curved downwardly as separating two of the gable panels from their respective side walls. The carton can be formed symmetrical and asymmetrical. A blank for the carton is disclosed.

A package having a bottom wall with in-folded gusset tips includes a plurality of upstanding side walls, each side wall contiguous or sealed to its adjacent side walls, a sealed top and a sealed bottom wall. The sealed bottom wall is formed from opposing leading and trailing panels, intermediate, opposing gusset panels and a sixth panel. The gusset panels are folded inwardly toward one another to form triangular panels. The triangular panels are disposed interior of the leading and trailing panels. The ends of the gusset panels define triangular tips that are folded away from one another. The sixth panel has a length that is less than or equal to the distance between the gusset tips.

Substantially parallelepipedic packaging and gable-top containers for liquid contents, for example milk, are manufactured by folding and sealing of laminated packaging material and include two substantially planar end portions, as well as four vertical wall panels. The volume of the packaging container may be increased in relation to the area of the packaging material employed in that the vertical wall panels, the primary wall panels, are supplemented with secondary wall panels which are defined by straight, vertical fold lines which, at the upper and lower ends of the panels, respectively, merge into pairwise converging diagonal fold lines which intersect at a point. In a blank for the packaging containers, the wall panels are defined throughout the greater part of their length, by straight, parallel, vertical fold lines.

A retainable access tab for a laminate for a carton blank is disclosed. The retainable access tab may have a predetermined configuration such as keyhole configuration or a hourglass configuration. The retainable access tab extends the length of a roof panel of a carton which is formed from the carton blank. In this manner, a shortened straw may be utilized to access the entire contents of the carton. The retainable access tab provides a hygienic environment for accessing the contents of the carton by revealing a previously untarnished surface for penetration of the straw. The retainable access tab has a hinge which allows it to be retained to the carton after insertion of a straw, In this manner, the potential for littering is decreased and the potential for greater recycling is increased by the present invention.

A gable top carton and its corresponding carton blank are disclosed. The carton includes curved side creases that are defined by curved score lines that divide one or more side panels from a top gabled structure and/or a bottom structure. The gabled structure includes pairs of diagonal creases defined by diagonal score lines. The diagonal score lines form an apex at one end and extend to vertical score lines that separate the side panels of the carton at the edge between adjacent side panels. The diagonal score lines form an angle with the vertical score lines. The vertex of the angle formed is coincident with the vertical score line to facilitate folding and create better quality corners by reducing bunching of carton material at the corner.

A blank for forming a gable top carton is set forth which reduces the surface area of the carton for a given carton volume. The carton blank comprises a generally rectangular body having an upper section, a mid section, and a lower section, each of the sections being separated from each other by one or more generally horizontal score lines. The upper section of the rectangular body comprises a plurality of score lines for defining a gabled top of the resulting carton while the lower section of the rectangular body comprises a plurality of score lines for defining a folded bottom section of the resulting carton. The mid section of the rectangular body comprises a plurality of score lines for defining four sidewalls of the resulting carton. Adjacent sidewalls are separated from one another by a first score line partially extending from the upper section and a second score line partially extending from the lower section. The endpoints of the first and second score lines are separated from one another to thereby allow the resulting carton to bulge.

A gable top carton and its corresponding carton blank are disclosed. The carton includes curved side creases that are defined by curved score lines that divide one or more side panels from a top gabled structure and/or a bottom structure.

A reducible volume container includes a package wall made from a laminated material having interior surface and an exterior surface, with at least one tear strip formed in the package wall. At least one layer of the laminated material is a monoaxially oriented material disposed on an inner surface of the package wall. The tear strip is defined by a pair of generally parallel frangible tear lines. Each tear line includes a linear cut formed in the exterior of the package wall. The linear cut is disposed generally parallel to the axial orientation of the axially-oriented material, and each linear cut has a depth extending only partly through the thickness of the package wall.

A method of venting a plant for filling containers (2) with an apportioned quantity of liquid without air inclusions by means of a dispensing pump (9) in which two control valves (11', 12') disposed at the outlet from a filler pipe (4) are intermittently opened and closed, the liquid (17) being supplied via a buffer container (13). To avoid faulty filling at the start of the filling operation during the forward run of product, and in order to be able as far as possible to determine an exact switch-on time for the actual filling process, it is according to the invention envisaged that for venting the filler pipe (4) and the dispensing pump (9) connected thereto, two serially connected control valves (11',12') are so controlled separately from each other that upon creation of the vacuum in the buffer container (13) both control valves (11', 12') are opened; after the major part of the air has bubbled out upwardly, firstly the upper control valve (12') and after an adjustable period the lower control valve (22') are closed after which the upper control valve (12') is opened and closed again after a further interval of time.

Method of and an apparatus for venting a filling plant

To provide a suitable filling atmosphere around a produce filling pipe on a packing machine and to make possible a rational, accurate cleaning of the filling pipe of the machine without having to dismantle and disassemble the filling pipe at a normal stoppage of the machine, the filling pipe is surrounded by a permanent tubular casing whose lower end is adapted so that it can be closed for cleaning with the aid of a detachable lid to form a container enclosing the filling pipe. The filling pipe, via a connecting means at the upper end of the casing, can be joined to an outer flow system to allow circulation of a cleansing agent.

A method and machine for the manufacture of packing containers of the type where a number of packing container blanks are successively converted to packing containers, open at the top, which are filled with contents, shaped and sealed. The packing container blanks are advanced intermittently during the processing and filling between the different stations, which means especially in packing machines with several conveying elements, that the driving unit of the machine will be unevenly loaded and that the working of the machine will be uneven and jerky. To overcome this it is proposed in accordance with the invention, that the driving of the different conveying elements sould take place asynchronously in accordance with a similar but mutually offset pattern of movement. The one conveying element (6') will then be substantially at standstill during the advance of the second conveying element (6') and vice versa, as a result of which the driving unit obtains an appreciably more uniform torque curve so that uneven operaton and consequent wear and noise can be prevented.
