A power tong assembly has a power tong and a backup for making up and breaking out of threaded tubular connections in tubulars such as drill pipe. The power tong assembly has an overall geometry, including but not limited to a jaw die shape, which reduces contact forces on the tubular, and on the tong body. Preferably, the dies have teeth which are angled to enhance engagement on the tubular. Crush zones or pockets may be provided on the dies, to permit deformation against hard banding on tubulars. In some embodiments, the tong jaws permit mounting the dies in different longitudinal (vertical) positions. In some embodiments, the fixed jaw within the backup has angled sidewalls which accommodate a broader tubular OD range. A cutout in the power tong cage lower plate permits a thicker tong rotary for a given overall tong assembly height.

Power tong assembly

A power tong positioner has one or more eddy current probes mounted in association with a power tong/backup unit. An electric current runs through the probe, and with the probe positioned close to a tubular connection, movement of the probe along the length of the connection, with the electric field encompassing surface features on the tubular, will cause a change in the electrical impedance (conductivity) which enable identification of the connection seam or other defined attributes (the 'target' attributes). The power tong/backup unit can be positioned accordingly. A portfolio of profiles of non-connection seam surface features of different tubular connections may be generated, stored in a database, and accessed by the system, which enables identifying the connection seam/face with greater accuracy. Other attributes of the invention include storing profile information on RFID tags, and storing and accessing tubular information from a cloud server or other form of remote database.

Power tong positioner

Apparatus and method for positioning a power makeup/breakout device, commonly referred to as a 'power tong unit,' along the longitudinal axis of a tubular, with respect to the end of a connection. A probe having an electric coil is mounted on the power tong. An alternating electric current is flowed through the coil, creating an electro-magnetic field emanating from the coil. Positioning the coil such that the tubular connection is within the magnetic field, then moving the coil such that the connection end moves within the magnetic field, permits the connection end to be seen as a discontinuity, by the principles of eddy current testing. The location of the connection end is used to manually position the tong, or is input to a processor and then to a power positioner, which properly positions the power tong with respect to the connection end.

Apparatus and method for determining the position of the end of a threaded connection, and for positioning a power tong relative thereto

Apparatus for positioning a power tong at a desired location with respect to the distance above the rig floor, and with respect to the center of the rig floor. A pedestal is secured to the structure of the rig. An upright member is mounted on the upper end of the pedestal, with a bearing disposed between the upright member and the pedestal, the bearing permitting the upright member to rotate around a vertical axis when moved by a powered ring gear assembly. A telescoping boom is rotatably mounted on the upright member, and one end thereof extends over the central part of the rig floor. Power tongs attached to the boom may thereby be positioned at desired positions with respect to the rig floor. Controls mounted on the power tongs and/or on the upright member permit control of the rotation of the boom, the upright member, and the power tong.

Boom type power tong positioner

A power tong set, with lead and back-up tongs, is mounted on the slip bowl of the traveling jack head of a snubbing unit and rotates with the slip bowl. Service lines (or umbelicals) for the tong set are not connected during string rotation. In an alternate version of the apparatus a fluid feed through swivel is mounted on the tong set, secured to the necessary tong operating and control service fluid line, or lines, such that the tong set can rotate with tong service lines between the tong set and the snubbing unit attached during rotation. In an alternate form, the tong set is mounted on the jack head, independently of the rotary table, and the tong set does not rotate when the rotary table rotates.

Snubbing unit tong apparatus

A motor driven serpentine chain circulating device for spinning drill pipe into engagement for final tightening by other devices. Jaws are closed and locked to position chain for embracing pipe before the chain tension is applied. Chain tension does not depend upon exact positioning of the jaw closure. Optional sequencing system speeds operation.
