An image processing apparatus includes a plurality of drive units, a control unit, and an operation information input unit. The plurality of drive units drive based on electric power supplied. The control unit shifts the plurality of drive units to a power saving state or a normal state. The operation information input unit is sequentially input first operation information indicating a start of a process and second operation information indicating a process content. The control unit shifts the plurality of drive units to the normal state when the first operation information is input to the operation information input unit with the plurality of drive units being in the power saving state. The control unit shifts a particular drive unit to the power saving state based on the second operation information when the second operation information is input.

An image forming apparatus places restriction on a print job. A memory stores a plurality of items of first print job information and corresponding print restriction levels. A print job information obtaining section obtains a plurality of items of second print job information from the print job. A restriction level selecting section reads the print restriction levels from the memory by using the items of second print information. The restriction level selecting section selects the highest one of the print restriction levels. A printing section prints print data contained in the print job at the selected highest one of the print restriction levels. The second print restriction levels may be lower in restriction level than the first print restriction levels. The user may be advised of a third printing format if the highest one of the first print restriction levels indicates that the print job is restricted.

The pixel electrodes and the color filter layer form color stripes. A reflection type color liquid crystal display device includes a liquid crystal cell controlled by a new field sequential method and a reflection device disposed at the rear surface of the cell. The device includes a band-like reflection sheet having reflection regions for reflecting the three-color lights of yellow, magenta and cyan. The reflection sheet is driven by a driving device, whereby the reflection regions are sequentially moved to the reverse side of the liquid crystal cell. In synchronism with the color changes of these reflection regions, the liquid crystal cell is controlled so that its light transmittance may be controlled in the way of color filters controlling the three picture elements of yellow, magenta, and cyan, simultaneously and time-sequentially three times. As a result of this 3-time time-sequential display, the desired color is displayed by the additive color process.

Field sequential color liquid crystal display device

A reflection type color liquid crystal display device including a liquid crystal cell to be controlled by a field sequential system and a reflection device disposed on the back side of the liquid crystal cell. In the reflection device, is a belt-like reflection sheet having reflection regions for reflecting lights of three colors R, G and B formed thereon. The reflection sheet is driven by a driver. A semi-transparent and semi-reflection type color liquid crystal display device includes a liquid crystal cell and a semi-transparent and semi-reflection device disposed on the back side of the liquid crystal cell. In the semi-transparent and semi-reflection device is a belt-like semi-transparent and semi-reflection film and a light source therein. The semi-transparent and semi-reflection film is driven by a driver.

Disclosed are a color filter, which can prevent, on a higher level, a liquid crystal layer from being contaminated with ionic materials, and a liquid crystal display device having improved display quality. The color filter comprises at least a substrate and a colored layer of a plurality of colors provided in a predetermined pattern on the substrate, and, after impurity elution, permits a liquid crystal to have a voltage holding ratio of not less than 90%. An antiferroelectric liquid crystal display device includes: an active matrix type LC cell and an antiferroelectric liquid crystal sealed in the cell. Liquid crystal molecules aligned to one of a first aligning direction and a second aligning direction are aligned in the other aligning direction in accordance with an applied voltage, thus forming a plurality of regions of different alignment states in a range shorter than a wavelength of light in a visible light band, and directions of said directors are changed in accordance with a ratio of regions in a first alignment state to regions in a second alignment state. The liquid crystal molecules may behave along a predetermined cone by a phase transition precursor in accordance with an applied voltage. The liquid crystal molecules may behave so as to be inclined in a direction perpendicular to an electric field, in accordance with an applied voltage.

Antiferroelectric liquid crystal display device

A liquid crystal material which exhibits an antiferroelectric phase while the liquid crystal material is in a bulk state, is sealed between substrates. The liquid crystal layer sealed between the substrates exhibits a mixed phase wherein the liquid crystal layer contains liquid crystal molecules aligned in a plurality of alignment states which differ from each other in the alignment order of the liquid crystal molecules forming adjoining smectic layers. The direction of the director of the liquid crystal layer varies continuously in accordance with the polarity and magnitude of a voltage applied to the liquid crystal layer. Gradation display can be achieved by arranging polarization plates such that the substrates are sandwiched therebetween.

Liquid crystal display device having a liquid crystal layer which contains liquid crystal molecules in a plurality of alignment state and method for driving the same

Placed between a pair of substrates is a liquid crystal which has a first ferroelectric phase where liquid crystal molecules are aligned substantially in a first direction in accordance with an applied voltage, a second ferroelectric phase where the liquid crystal molecules are aligned substantially in a second direction in accordance with an applied voltage, and an intermediate alignment state where the director of the liquid crystal is directed between the first and second directions. The liquid crystal in use is selected so that the first and second directions intersect each other at an angle of greater than 45.degree.. The transmission axis of one of a pair of polarization plates is set inclined to an intermediate direction between the first and second directions by 22.5.degree., and the optical axis of the other polarization plate is set perpendicular to the transmission axis of the former polarization plate. A voltage of a range which does not set the liquid crystal in a ferroelectric phase and can provide maximum and minimum transmittances is applied between electrodes which are so arranged as to sandwich a layer of the liquid crystal.

Liquid crystal display apparatus

A liquid crystal cell is formed by bonding a first substrate on which a first electrode and a first aligning film are formed, and a second substrate on which a second electrode and a second aligning film are formed by a seal member. A liquid crystal is filled in the liquid crystal cell. The thicknesses of the aligning films are set to 10 nm to 35 nm. An aligning treatment is performed twice on each of the aligning films in the opposite directions. The first aligning treatment is performed to give a pretilt angle of 5 degrees to the liquid crystal, and the second aligning treatment is performed to give a pretilt angle of 6 degrees to the liquid crystal, with the result that a pretilt angle of 1 degree is actually given to the liquid crystal. The glass-transition temperatures of the aligning films are selected to be about 250.degree. C., so that the aligning films are not transformed at the time of baking the seal member.

LCD using liquid crystal of ferroelectric and/or antiferroelectric phase

A liquid crystal layer is sealed between a pair of substrates on which opposite electrodes are formed. The liquid crystal layer is formed of a liquid crystal which exhibits an antiferroelectric phase while the liquid crystal is in a bulk state. When the liquid crystal is sealed between the substrates as the liquid crystal layer, the liquid crystal exhibits a ferrielectric phase wherein liquid crystal molecules aligned in a first state of being aligned in a first direction and liquid crystal molecules aligned in a second state of being aligned in a second direction are present in predetermined order. In accordance with the polarity and magnitude of a voltage applied between the opposite electrodes, the ratio of the number of liquid crystal molecules aligned in the first state to the number of liquid crystal molecules aligned in the second state varies such that the direction of the director of the liquid crystal layer varies continuously. Gradation display can be achieved by detecting a variation in the director through the use of a pair of polarization plates arranged in a crossed Nicols fashion.
