Portable communication devices transmit digital images and their location information to a central server. If a particular location is often photographed it can be designated as a hot spot. Thereafter, if a communication device is currently transmitting from within a vicinity of the hot spot, based on the location data received from the communication device, notification data can be transmitted to the communication device for notifying the user of the hot spot. The notification data can include directional information for the user to access on the communication device for enabling the user to find the hot spot.

A method of accessing an image database containing location data and determining one or more clusters of the digital images based on their location data. A hotspot location is determined for representing the cluster of the digital images and the results are stored for later access. The computer is connected to a network and receives data from a device including data identifying a current location. After determining that the device is within a selected notification distance from the hotspot location, a notification is transmitted over the network.

Organizing nearby picture hotspots

A network connected computer receives data from a wireless communication device including location data and user data. The computer is programmed to determine if the wireless communication device is in a vicinity of a preselected location, stored on the computer, based on the data for identifying the location of the wireless communication device. The computer transmits data to the communication device for notifying the user of the communication device that the user is in the vicinity of the preselected location. Directional information can then be sent to the communication device for the user to access in order to assist the user in finding the preselected location.

Method of locating nearby picture hotspots

A mobile communication device adapted to communicate with a plurality of pre-determined sources disposed at pre-determined different locations includes an identification code, a receiver adapted to receive wirelessly communicated information from a particular source at a pre-determined location, an orientation detector that detects the orientation of the receiver relative to the pre-determined location of the particular source to provide an orientation signal indicating that the mobile communication device is oriented toward the predetermined location of the particular source, and an interface circuit responsive to the wirelessly communicated information and the orientation signal to register the identification code with the particular source.

A system that provides rapid detection of modifications to content on a removable storage device. The system includes a removable storage device having a code for indicating that modifications were made to the content on the removable storage device. The system also includes a media processor for reading the code of the removable storage device, comparing the code to a previously stored code in a memory, and mounting a pre-established file system database structure for the removable storage device when the value of the code of the removable storage device equals the value of the previously stored code.

A clamping arrangement essentially comprising two lever arms driven at one end by a solenoid and having a resilient clamp pad mounted on a flexure member at the other end thereof. The clamp pad is made of a resilient material such as, for example, urethane and has four non-parallel side walls defining an upper face which is complementary to the radial face of the scanning apparatus gate. The sloping side walls of the clamp pad act as a light baffle to prevent reflected light from entering the imaging lens, and the pad is gimballed so that any variations between the upper surface of the clamp pad and the radial surface of the gate will be eliminated attain as perfect a match therebetween as is possible. In another embodiment of the clamping arrangement, a single arm can be utilized in place of the dual arm arrangement described above. The single arm has a Y-shape in which the clamp pad is supported on the branched end of the arm and the solenoid drives the single member. An additional clamp pad can be provided for clamping laminated paper attached to the film for a reprocessing order after the film itself has been clamped by the first-mentioned clamp pad against the gate in the area of the aperture.

A protection device for a lens used in a scanning apparatus for imaging data on photographic film, comprises a plate and having a finger gripping portion, a member slidably retained in the plate, a glass piece removably carried by the member, and a biasing member operatively associated with the member for selectively permitting secure holding of the glass piece on the member and easy removal of the glass piece from the member. The plate is provided with a biasing device for securely retaining the member in a desired location such that the glass piece is in a predetermined lens protecting position. A switch is associated with the plate such that the switch is moved to an open position upon movement of the member away from the plate. The biasing member is a pivotally mounted spring configured to hold the glass piece in a desired location on the member and has V-shaped portions to engage portions of the member for positive locking of the spring in the member.

Apparatus and method are described for determining the transmission factor or the density of a translucent element, such as an optical filter, using the cosine-to-the-fourth law. The apparatus includes a source of light of constant color and intensity. A detector is mounted on a track for movement along rectilinear path with the plane of the operative face of the detector parallel to the path. A reading of the intensity of light from the source sensed by the detector is taken in one position with the element in the light path and in another position with the element absent. The positions being such that the two readings are equal. The angles .THETA. and .alpha. of incidence of light on the detector in the two positions are determined and computer means determine value of ##EQU1## to give the value of the transmission factor.
