A short-range RF access point contains two Bluetooth devices. The first device is programmed to remain a master device. The second device is programmed to remain a scanning slave device. The two devices are connected to exchange clock, address, and synchronization information. The access point master device transmits inquiry and paging packets and establishes connections with potential slave devices that respond to inquiries from the master device. The master device's clock is the piconet clock for the resulting connections. The access point slave device primarily remains in an inquiry scanning mode, searching for inquiry packets from mobile devices that are potential master devices. When the access point slave device receives the inquiry packets and paging packets from a mobile device, it then passes control to the access point master device. Several embodiments are disclosed for passing control from the access point slave to the access point master.

Short-range RF access point design enabling services to master and slave mobile devices

An apparatus, method, and system for a remote-page devices. Communications are made more efficient with a connectivity tool. Remote-page enabled clients allow a short-range RF device to communicate beyond its coverage area or that of a nearby access point. Such a remote-page enabled client may issue remote-page messages and send them to remote-page enabled access points, which will ultimately route the message to a desired target client beyond the coverage area of the original client. The disclosure further teaches a remote-page enabled access point that may accept remote-page messages from clients and pass them on to remote access points that are communicating with the desired target device. The disclosure also teaches a remote-page server that tracks specified remote-page enabled access points and all clients disposed in communication with the access points. The remote-page server allows access points to query it for the existence of desired target devices and provides information relating to the existence of any such target devices. Information provided from a remote-page server to an access point allows the access point to establish a communications channel with a remote access point and act as a conduit for communications between an original client and a desired target client. This allows for client devices to not only communicate with devices outside of their given RF coverage area, but to also communicate across a communications network with other types of devices.

Apparatus, method and system for a remote-page device

A method is disclosed for facilitating the preparation of customized messaging between a wireless access point and a variety of service platforms. The wireless access point includes a registry of trigger words, each word specifying the particular events that must be detected by the access point upon receiving a packet from a mobile wireless device, in order to invoke the process of sending a corresponding server message to a selected server. When the wireless packet is received by the access point, the access point uses the various types of information in the received packet as stimuli to be matched with the trigger words stored in the trigger word registry. If there is a match, then a customized message corresponding to the matched trigger word is accessed from a customized message registry and sent to the server specified in the message. The server uses this information for an appropriate query of its database to access the content. The content is then used for a particular application or returned to the access point for communication to the mobile device. The wireless access point includes management software to present to the system administrator on a connected personal computer, a management menu of example trigger words and example server messages. The management software provides an editor to enable the administrator to optionally customize the example trigger words and/or server messages to suit particular applications.

Customized messaging between wireless access point and services

A system and method for location-dependent services for mobile stations using short range wireless technology such as Bluetooth. In an advantageous embodiment, the location-based service is a suggested profile change for a mobile station. A suggested profile may be a mode of operation for the mobile station's current location (e.g., silence in a meeting room) and may be accompanied by the period of time that the profile is valid and a timer value for a forced change to the suggested profile in the absence of user interaction. In response to a prompt from a mobile station that has received a suggested profile, a user may either accept or cancel the suggested profile. Various mechanisms are disclosed for ensuring that services such as a suggested profile change is sent to mobile stations having more than a passing association with the access point's coverage area.

Location-based services for mobile stations using short range wireless technology

The user of a mobile terminal capable of receiving low-power, short-range transmissions enters keywords indicative of messages the user wishes to peruse. When the mobile terminal receives a short-range transmission having a message, keywords associated with the message are compared with the user-entered keywords; if any match, a banner portion of the message is displayed on the mobile terminal and the mobile terminal issues a sensible alert. The user may request to view the message body associated with the banner portion. The user may request to take actions regarding the message body, such as storing the message body in the mobile terminal or calling a telephone number contained in the message body.

Push content filtering for short range communication

The user of a mobile terminal capable of receiving broadcast transmissions, such as Digital Video Broadcast (DVB) transmissions, enters keywords indicative of messages the user wishes to peruse. When the mobile terminal receives a broadcast transmission having a message, keywords associated with the message are compared with the user-entered keywords; if any match, at least a portion of the message is displayed on the mobile terminal. The displayed portion may be a 'crawl' which appears at the bottom of the display screen. The user may request to view the remaining portions, if any, of the message, or to download data linked to the message, where the downloaded data may be for viewing or for another purpose.

Push content filtering for broadcast communication

A mobile, wireless terminal contains apparatus for creating, editing and storing user personalized profiles for access by inquiring terminals in a short-range communication system. The mobile, wireless terminal contains databases for storing standardized format profiles containing user contact information, standardized format profiles of user interests and user or manufacturer defined profiles. The personalized profiles are stored in a single record of a Service Discovery Protocol database. Screen display apparatus in the mobile terminal displays indexes and contents of the profiles for user access in creating, editing and storing user profiles. The mobile terminal includes apparatus responsive to SDP inquires from inquiring terminals for access to and acquisition of the user defined personalized profiles.

Personal profile sharing and management for short-range wireless terminals

A system and method is disclosed for dynamically allocating bandwidth among devices connected to a short-range radio communication link, wherein the link possesses a maximum allowable bandwidth (Max) for all connection. As devices request connection to the link, each device transmits a CoD device class, and a bandwidth requirement for each device, wherein a weighted value is derived therefrom. The invention proceeds according to protocol by comparing the bandwidth of a requesting device to the Max value of the link. If the bandwidth requirement&#x3c;Max, then the connection is allowed. As additional devices request connection, the bandwidth requirement values are added together and are compared to the Max value. If the sum&#x3c;Max, then each device is allocated it's a specific value of bandwidth, along with additional bandwidth that is derived from et weighted value. If the sum&#x3e;Max, the requesting connection is denied.

Dynamic bandwidth allocation for bluetooth access point connections

A network including a host device and a plurality of transceiver satellite nodes for communicating data from terminal devices interacting with the nodes, to the host. The nodes include identification codes used by the host for establishing wireless communication links either between a node and the host, or between two or more nodes. The host includes a data store for storing identification codes of nodes. The host pages the nodes by their identification codes and, upon establishing communication with a node, the list of identification codes is passed to the node, which then pages other nodes which may be out of range of the host, which then receive the list and may page yet other nodes, until all listed nodes are linked into the network. A tag reader is connected or connectable to the host for reading tags associated with nodes and thereby capturing the identification codes of the nodes.

Short range RF network configuration

A method is provided to minimize the protocol stacks needed for a short range wireless access point to rapidly communicate a message to a short range wireless mobile device and display it to the user. The short range wireless access point device stores an Access Point Service Indicator (APSI) message characterizing the service platform offerings. The APSI message has a unique message ID in its header. The user device's transport protocol layer is modified to detect the unique message ID and load it into an APSI message buffer. The transport protocol layer passes the APSI message directly to the application layer, bypassing the middleware protocol layers. The method can be applied to communications between various types of wireless devices to enable rapid communication, such as between two mobile devices, between fixed and mobile devices, between short range devices or between long range devices.

Service notification on a low bluetooth layer

An apparatus, method, and system for a database of Bluetooth devices. The Bluetooth directory database accelerates, facilitates, and simplifies communications. Communications are made more efficient with a connectivity tool. Both the Bluetooth directory database and connectivity tool may be integrated into a Bluetooth device. The connectivity tool uses the Bluetooth directory database to correlate Bluetooth addresses of various devices together with other device identifiers, e.g., cleartextual representations. Thus, when other Bluetooth devices are encountered, information obtained from inquiry and/or page responses may be saved into the Bluetooth directory database for future reference. In one non-limiting example embodiment, communications are more efficient because the connectivity tool reduces the amount of subsequent Bluetooth inquiries and responses required to identify and/or engage in communications with Bluetooth devices. Rather than inquiring to identify and locate Bluetooth devices in a particular coverage area and requiring user selections, the Bluetooth directory database may be used as a cache to retrieve a desired device's communication information (i.e., its correlated Bluetooth address, its functionality (e.g. GOEP, SDAP, etc. profiles), its other related information) and communications may commence more efficiently as a result by directing communications based on the retrieved communication information.

Apparatus, method and system for a connectivity tool in bluetooth devices

A powerline based network including a powerline, a Bluetooth access point connected to the powerline, and a remote Bluetooth module connected to the powerline capable of communicating with the access point via the powerline. The access point includes a plug for connection to an electrical outlet of the powerline, a Bluetooth communication module for transmitting and receiving wireless data signals, an external network interface for communicating with an external network, and a routing means for routing data signals via the powerline. Bluetooth access point and remote bluetooth modules for powerline based networking

A local services platform including a server subsystem is connected to one or more APs; an application subsystem and provides headset/terminals (HS) with real-time services. A streaming interface is installed between the server and the application. The HS is capable of being activated and paired with a host device, typically a telephone under standard Link Control Protocol. The HS includes an extra button, when operated, causes the host to place the HS in an 'idle' mode. During the 'idle' mode, the HS listens to AP inquiries or carries out inquiries. When an AP beacon is detected, the HS requests a HOLD state from the paired telephone and receives streaming data after completing a connection to the AP beacon. When the streaming data is in channels, the HS can switch among the channels or end the transmission by operating the idle button.

Short-range radio terminal adapted for data streaming and real time services

A method and an apparatus in a short range wireless communication stores a list of keywords and a type list of information indicative of content and services available at an Access Point. A user terminal creates and stores a similar list of keyword and types. The user requests the keyword and types from the Access Point. This list is transmitted to the user within the service discovery protocol during connection set-up. The user Keyword list and Types are matched to the Access point Keywords and Types list to determine if a session should be established or terminated. The Access point may also connect to the terminal to obtain a list of the terminal Keywords and Types to determine if content is available to push to the terminal.

Automatic determination of access point content and services for short-range wireless terminals

Efficient access point roaming techniques involve a terminal device handing over a wireless communications session from a first access point to a second access point. The terminal device establishes a link with the second access point; authenticates the link with the second access point using an alternative access point address and a group key associated with the terminal device; and continues the communications session with the second access point using an address of the second access point. Various alternative access point addresses may be used, such as the address of the first access point, or a random address created by the terminal device during initiation of a prior access point connection. The terminal device may transmit a directive to the second access point to employ the alternative access point address.
