The disclosed computer-implemented method for backing up heterogeneous virtual environments may include (1) identifying a request to back up a virtual machine executing on a host system, (2) creating a storage map of a virtual storage environment of the virtual machine by (a) identifying, from the host system, a virtual disk file that stores data for the virtual machine and (b) identifying, from a guest system operating within the virtual machine, one or more virtual storage devices that store data for the virtual machine, and (3) creating a unified backup of the virtual machine based on the storage map of the virtual storage environment by coordinating a backup operation of the virtual disk file with a backup operation of the virtual storage device. Various other methods, systems, and computer-readable media are also disclosed.

Systems and methods for backing up heterogeneous virtual environments

A network load balancing method in a blade grouping chassis can be provided. The method can include detecting system conditions among blades coupled to a single blade grouping chassis. The method also can include maintaining a rotation of selected ones of the blades among which individual blades are selected for use in network load balancing inbound workloads. Finally, the method can include removing an individual blade from the rotation responsive to detecting a system condition in the individual blade indicative of an inability of the individual blade to support high availability in network load balancing. As such, the method further can include re-adding the individual blade to the rotation responsive to detecting a system condition in the individual blade indicative of an ability of the individual blade to support high availability in network load balancing.

Network switch load balance optimization

A system and method for identifying properties of virtual resources to efficiently perform backups and restores of cluster data. A cluster of nodes is coupled to a data storage medium. A node receives a request for a backup or a restore of cluster data. In response to this request, the node queries a cluster subsystem and a virtual subsystem of all other cluster nodes for identification of VMs, a subset of corresponding stored data, and an identification of VMs which are highly available (HA). In response to receiving query responses, the node aggregates the results and sends them to a backup server. These to aggregated results may then be used to schedule subsequent backup and restore operations. In addition, the node may use the results to complete the current backup or restore operation.

Discovering cluster resources to efficiently perform cluster backups and restores

A system and method for avoiding duplicate backups of data in a volume backup image. A cluster of nodes is coupled to a data storage medium configured to store data corresponding to a shared volume. A node receives a request for the backup of the shared volume. In response to this request, the node queries all other nodes in the cluster for identification of a subset of the shared volume data that should be excluded from the backup. The identified subset of the data may correspond to at least a file under control of a database application or other particular application. It may be known that this identified subset of the data will be backed up by a subsequent agent-based backup operation after the volume backup. In response to receiving all query responses, the node initiates a backup corresponding to the data in the shared volume excluding the identified subset of the data.
