A modulation method for data packets transmitted on a mobile communication channel, the method comprising a first linear modulation mode, to be used when the radio conditions are good, and a second constant envelop modulation mode, to be used when the radio conditions are poor. Since a constant envelope-modulated signal is degraded more when time dispersion occurs, the first linear modulation mode is also used when the time dispersion is severe.

Methods and base stations for controlling downlink power, especially in systems employing virtual cells, are described. An apparatus for use in a receiver in a communication system in which signals cover a wide range of power levels. The apparatus provides reduced power consumption without sacrificing receiver sensitivity by using an amplifier having a fixed, relatively narrow dynamic range that can by selectively positioned to accommodate the wide range of power levels. The amplifier is placed earlier in the receiver signal processing chain than comparable amplifiers in conventional receivers.

The present invention is related to a terrestrial cellular radio communication network comprising at least a first base station (BS ) in which a common set of multi carrier power amplifiers ( ) are used to amplify radio signals transmitted by the first base station (BS ) in different cells. The invention enables reductions in the total maximum output power the first base station (BS ) needs to support when downlink power control functions, such as power control or discontinuous transmission, and/or Adaptive Channel Allocation are applied in the cells served by the first base station (BS ).

Methods and arrangement relating to a radio communication network

A power efficient indoor radio base station for use with wireless cellular telecommunication systems is disclosed. A small unitary package design is achieved by reducing the level of power dissipation, and subsequently, the size of the heat sink required for heat dissipation. In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, a plurality of transmitter signals are combined in a hybrid combiner to generate a pair of output signals. A first output signal is transmitted through a dipole antenna resulting in vertical polarization and a second output signal is transmitted through a horizontal antenna producing horizontal polarization. Further, a phase shift of 90&deg; is introduced between the signals prior to transmission. The resulting simultaneous transmission of the perpendicularly oriented signals yields a substantially circular polarized field in the area of coverage. Power dissipation is reduced by transmitting the horizontal polarized signal because it is converted to useful energy that would otherwise be dissipated in a load resistor.
