A shank adapter, forming part of a drilling assembly, has a main body extending axially between a first end and a second end, an externally threaded male spigot portion provided at the second end, and a non-threaded shank positioned axially intermediate the main body and the threaded section. A radially projecting shoulder is positioned axially between the main body and the male spigot portion. The shank has a transition section positioned adjacent to the shoulder at the second end having an outside diameter that increases in a direction from the spigot portion to the shoulder. A cross-sectional shape profile of the outer surface of the transition section has a segment of an ellipse having a semi-major axis (a), a semi-minor axis (b) and an exponential factor (n) according to the equation: A ratio of the semi-major to semi-minor axes (a:b) is within the range 2b<a<8b.

Elliptical design for shank adapters

A drill string rod is arranged to form part of an assembly of connected drill string rods. The drill string rod includes an elongate central rod portion extending axially between a male and female end. The central rod portion is a hollow-cylindrical defined by an inner first diameter (d) and an outer second diameter (D). The male end includes a spigot having a base projecting axially from a shoulder that axially separates the spigot and the central rod portion. The female end includes a sleeve portion configured to fit to the spigot. The base has an outer thread and the sleeve portion has an inner thread, the inner thread corresponding to the outer thread such that the inner thread of the sleeve portion is attachable to the outer thread of the base of the spigot of a further drill string rod of the assembly.

Drill string joint design

A drill string including an elongate hollow main length section and a male spigot portion provided at the second end and having an externally threaded section and a non-threaded shank positioned axially intermediate the main length section and the threaded section. The shank includes a transition section positioned adjacent the main length section or a radially projecting shoulder at the second end. The transition section has an outside diameter that increases in a direction from the male spigot portion to the main length section or the shoulder. The cross-sectional shape profile of the outer surface of the transition section in the plane of the longitudinal axis has a segment of an ellipse having semi-major axis (a) and a semi-minor axis (b), wherein the ratio of the semi-major to semi-minor axes (a:b) is within the range 2b<a<8b.

A drill string rod includes an elongate central rod portion. The central rod portion has a hollow-cylindrical shape with an inner first diameter (d) and an outer second diameter (D). The male end includes a spigot having a base projecting axially from a shoulder that axially separates the spigot and the central rod portion. The female end has a sleeve portion that fits to the spigot. An inner thread of the sleeve portion is attachable to an outer thread of the base of the spigot of a further drill string rod. In a radial plane to the longitudinal axis of the drill string rod, the base of the spigot is defined by an outer third diameter (D) and an inner fourth diameter (d) and the sleeve portion is defined by an outer fifth diameter (D) and an inner sixth diameter (d), wherein the second diameter (D) is &#x3e;60 mm.

A rock drilling shank adaptor includes an elongate body having an internal flushing bore and an entry hole through the sidewall of the adaptor in fluid communication with the internal bore. The adaptor wall at the region of the entry hole is reinforced such that an internal diameter of the flushing bore at the reinforced region is less than an internal diameter of the bore at a position axially beyond the reinforced region.

A drill string rod forms part of a drill string having one end configured with a male spigot portion to be received within a corresponding rod female sleeve end. To minimize stress concentrations within the threaded male and female coupling, the male spigot is configured with a large diameter or cross-sectional area being at least equal to the cross sectional area or diameter of the main length section.

A drill string and a threaded coupling region for a drill string include threaded male and female ends that are optimized to maximize energy transmission efficiency for percussion drilling. The coupling includes a male spigot to be received within a female sleeve, such that an axial length of the overlap of the spigot within the sleeve is less than an outside diameter of the sleeve.

A pipe coupling includes a first and second connected tubular element forming an elongated tube and being connected by a connection arrangement that biases the first tubular element against the second tubular. An annular sealing element is provided between and overlapping opposed end portions of the elements. The annular sealing element has a generally T-shaped cross-section and includes a first portion that forms a stem of the T-shaped cross section and extends in a radial direction and defines the outer periphery thereof, and a second portion formed by two opposing flanges that form the cross-bar of the T-shaped cross section and define the inner periphery thereof. At least one of the flanges presents a rounded bulge forming an outer peripheral surface of one flange. The bulge is sealed with an inner periphery of one of the tubular elements and extends continuously around the circumference of the annular sealing element.

A percussion drilling apparatus is arranged to affect at least one characteristic of a shock wave produced in a drill string. The apparatus includes an elongate energy transmission adaptor having a shock wave modification sleeve configured with a free end and an attachment end projecting radially from an outer surface of the adaptor.

A rock drilling shank adaptor includes an elongate body having an internal flushing bore and an entry hole through the sidewall of the adaptor in fluid communication with the internal bore. The flushing hole is optimized to reduce the likelihood of fracture at the wall of the adaptor and in particular includes straight sections at axially forward and rearwardmost regions of the hole.
