A method includes implementing an inverted degradation model to determine an optimal battery core temperature. The inverted degradation model receives as inputs one or more of a power state value indicating whether the battery is currently in a high-power state or a low power state, a battery temperature value representing a current battery core temperature, a battery degradation value representing a battery degradation status, a battery age indicator representing a current age of the battery, a state of charge value representing a remaining battery charge and a battery current load value representing a current draw from the battery by the electric vehicle. The inverted degradation model outputs a desired battery core temperature value. The method includes operating the battery thermal system in order to achieve the desired battery core temperature.

A state observer obtains current state information from the engine system, and a feature calculator uses data obtained from the state observer to calculate one or more feature indicators, which are monitored by a health estimator for the occurrence of a change using one or more change probability models. When the health estimator identifies a change, a fault isolator determines a component of the engine system that is subject to fault or health deterioration.

Online monitoring and diagnostics in vehicle powertrains

New and/or alternative approaches to determine mass flow using a flow measurement device in a pulsatile flow context. The flow measurement device is configured to generate a delta-pressure measurement. A semi-physical valve model is generated for the flow measurement device, and the delta-pressure measurement is then is isolated using the model. A discharge coefficient map is determined for the flow measurement device by testing using sets of operating parameters for a system. The operating parameters of the system are then used to determine the discharge coefficient for use in estimating mass flow with the semi-physical valve model. The resultant estimated mass flow can be used to control the system, and a Factor of Effective Area estimate generated using the valve model can be used to determine the status of the flow measurement device and identify or predict a need for maintenance.

Methods and systems for fault mitigation in an engine system. For ordinary operation, a set of control signals are generated after calculating airflows within the engine system using a set of flow models linked to components of the engine system, while underweighting or omitting an output of a sensor in the engine system. When a fault is identified, the set of flow models is analyzed differently by underweighting or omitting one or more flow models in favor of using the sensor output. By so doing, the engine system can continue to be operated without triggering an on-board diagnostic alert requiring cessation of operation.
