An apparatus for encoding frames of a sequence of source frames of video image data to be encoded. The apparatus includes encoding circuitry configured to encode the source frames using reference frames. The apparatus also includes monitoring circuitry configured to, when the encoding circuitry is encoding a source frame using one or more reference frames, monitor the memory bandwidth being used when using the one or more reference frames when encoding the source frame. The apparatus further includes encoding circuitry that is operable to, in response to the monitored memory bandwidth being greater than a threshold, to control the encoding circuitry to encode a subsequent part of the source frame using a modified video encoding process to restrict the memory bandwidth usage when using one or more reference frames when encoding a subsequent part of a source frame.

When encoding an array of data elements, or a stream of such arrays, using an encoder comprising encoding circuitry operable to encode the array(s) of data elements as a plurality of independent segments, wherein each independent segment can be decoded independently; a header is generated for output with an encoded data stream including the plurality of independent segments wherein the header contains information indicative of the location of each of the plurality of independent segments within the encoded data stream. When an encoded data stream associated with such a header is to be decoded, a decoder may thus read the header to identify the location of the independent segment within the data stream and then read and decode the identified segments from the identified location(s) in the data stream.

Encoding data arrays

A data processing apparatus and method are provided for performing a transform between spatial and frequency domains when processing video data. The data processing apparatus comprises transform circuitry configured to receive N input values and to perform a sequence of operations to generate N output values representing the transform of the N input values between the spatial and frequency domains. In doing this, the transform circuitry employs a base circuitry that is configured to receive M internal input values generated by the transform circuitry, where M is greater than or equal to 4, and to perform a base operation equivalent to matrix multiplication of the M internal input values by a Hankel matrix, which is a square matrix with constant skew diagonals, where each element of the array identifies a coefficient, performance of the base operation generating M internal output values for returning to the transform circuitry. The transform circuitry is arranged during performance of the sequence of operations to generate from the N input values multiple sets of the M internal input values, to provide each set of M internal input values to the base circuitry in order to cause multiple sets of the M internal output values to be produced, and to derive the N output values from the multiple sets of M internal output values. It has been found that such an approach is scalable to accommodate varying sizes of N, results in a significant reduction in the number of multiplications required in order to perform the transform between the spatial and frequency domains of the N input values, and produces a bit exact result.

A product and method for decoding information is provided. The product includes a sensor for detecting a plurality of marks on a surface to obtain associated mark location data, at least a first group of the plurality of marks being arranged on the surface so as to define an invisible raster with predetermined dimensions and marks in at least a second group of the plurality of marks are displaced from raster locations in a manner encoding information, and a processor for receiving from the sensor at least some of the mark location data, the processor determining, using the received mark location data, a position of the invisible raster on the surface, and decoding information based on positions of at least some of the marks in the second group of the plurality of marks relative to locations on the invisible raster.

A method and a corresponding device for generating true random numbers for use in encryption of a message for secure transmission of said message from a sending device to a receiver, or for authentication of a sent message. An optical image represented by optical data is obtained by an optical sensor and processed in order to improve the stochasticity of the optical data. A cyclic number series is used, which has the characteristic that the position in the number series of each number sequence of a first predetermined length is determined unambiguously. The number series is printed out a plurality of times across the surface, different rotations of the first cyclic number series being used so that displacements arise between adjacent number series. The surface is divided into a plurality of code windows, which comprise at least three number series and have one number series overlapping one number series of adjacent code windows. The position of the code windows in the x-direction is coded by means of the displacements between the cyclic number series belonging to the code window. A second number series is used for coding in the y-direction. A method and a device for determining a virtual raster of a code pattern consisting of a plurality of marks with associated coordinates m . Each mark is located at a nominal position but displaced from the nominal position in one of a plurality of directions, depending upon the value of the mark. The nominal positions form raster points g of the virtual raster, and the raster points are situated on raster lines, which intersect at a first angle. In addition there is a device for determining an initial vector V on the basis of the coordinates m , m of one or more marks, which initial vector extends approximately between a first and a second adjacent raster point g , g . A calculation device determines a second vector V , which forms said angle with the first vector and is the same length as the first vector and extends from the second raster point g approximately to a third raster point g . The mark coordinate m which is associated with the third raster point g is determined. Subsequently the actual coordinates are calculated for the third raster point on the basis of the third mark's coordinates and its value. The actual coordinates for the third raster point are stored, after which the procedure is repeated taking the second vector as the starting point.
