A high voltage open-air switch has a movable disconnect switch blade which contains a circuit interrupter therein having interrupter contacts in series with the open air disconnect switch contacts. The circuit interrupter has a lower BIL rating than the switch. An operating mechanism causes the independent operation of the interrupter and disconnect switch such that there is a high speed opening of the interrupter contacts, followed by the low speed opening of the disconnect switch contacts, and a slow speed closing of the disconnect switch contacts followed by the high speed closing of the interrupter contacts. The switch can be adapted to numerous switch configurations and permits substantial savings in space by the reduced mounting space requirements for the interrupter assembly.

Combined interrupter disconnect switch blade for high voltage switch

A circuit switching mechanism for use in a high voltage circuit breaker is disclosed. The disclosed mechanism comprises a charging system (12); trip latch mechanism (14); an opening spring (16); a closing spring (18) positioned coaxially with the opening spring; a support structure (22) supporting the open and closing springs; and a first rod member (24) operatively associated with a circuit interrupter, the first rod member being operatively coupled to the open and closing springs such that discharging of the opening spring effects the movement of the first rod member in a first direction and discharging of the closing spring effects the movement of the first rod member in a second direction. The charging system (12) for charging the open and closing springs comprises a motor; a worm gear coupled to the motor; a cam coupled to the worm gear, the worm gear transmitting rotational energy from the motor to the cam; a roller follower comprising a first roller bearing against the cam, the roller follower moving linearly in response to rotation of the cam; and a push rod coupled to the roller follower, the push rod moving linearly with the roller follower and engaging the support structure.

Circuit switching mechanism and charging system therefor

The movable contact of a puffer interrupter contains a movable conductive tubular sleeve which is electrically connected to and is slidably mounted within a hollow conductive adapter which is supported from the end of a bushing insulator. An insulation rod flexibly connects the adapter to the housing. A pair of flexible rods connect the end of the interrupter to the end of the housing. The puffer interrupter is mounted within a dead tank housing.

Slip-through mounting structure for circuit interrupter

An operating mechanism for a combined interrupter and disconnect switch comprises an operating crank and an interrupter support housing which are separately rotatable about a common pivotal axis. The interrupter switch is part of a disconnect switch arm and is secured to the support housing. The interrupter contacts are operated by a linearly movable rod which has an end connected to a lever extending from the operating crank and is movable thereby. A crank arm connected to said operating crank is connected to and moved by a linearly movable operating shaft. A spring-biased latch lever is pivotally mounted to the interrupter support housing and releasably engages the free end of the crank arm lever so that the housing rotates with the crank for a first portion of the rotation of the crank and closes the disconnect switch. When the disconnect switch closes, the latch releases and the crank rotates relative to the housing to operate the linearly movable rod which operates the interrupter switch.

Two-step operating mechanism for combined interrupter disconnect switch

A guidance system for an interrupter switcher comprising a first guide positioned in between the contact support and the movable contact system of the interrupter, and a second guide inserted into the stationary contact system of the interrupter. According to the invention the second guide is capable of receiving the nozzle of the movable contact system. An interrupter with the guidance system is assembled by positioning the first guide between the contact support and the movable contact system, positioning the second guide within the stationary contact system, inserting the nozzle of the movable contact system into the second guide, and mounting the stationary contact system in the interrupter housing. The assembly of an interrupter with a guidance system results in a self-adjusting switcher interrupter capable of maintaining a stable alignment between the interrupter's movable and stationary contacts while opening and closing the interrupter.
