Disclosed are systems, methods, and non-transitory computer-readable media for protocol independent data unit forwarding. A packet forwarding system receives a data unit comprising a header byte string via an input port. The packet forwarding system parses the data unit based on a header type determined based on the input port, yielding a parsing output describing the header byte string of the data unit. The packet forwarding system updates a metadata item associated with the data unit based on the parsing output and determines a packet forwarding instruction for forwarding the data unit to a destination based on the metadata item associated with the data unit. The packet forwarding system forwards the data unit to the destination based on the packet forwarding instruction and the metadata item associated with the data unit.

Protocol independent data unit forwarding

Various embodiments provide for cut-through data unit forwarding with early ingress processing of a data unit in a communications network, such as an Ethernet-based network. According to some embodiments, cut-through data unit forwarding is performed such that data unit processing is initiated by a receiving network device while the data unit is still underway from a transmitting network device.

Various embodiments described herein support or provide for low latency protection switching, such as detecting a failure in a network associated with a network topology; determining a node that is affected by the failure; identifying a recovery scenario that is preconfigured for the node in an event of the detected failure; setting a value for a protection mode identifier associated with the node; and determining an alternate data transmission path for each node in the group of nodes based on the protection mode identifier.

Low latency protection switching

Various embodiments described herein provide for in-service scanning and correction of stored data for achieving functional safety. For some embodiments, a data scanning and correction system periodically reads data from different portions (e.g., addresses) of a storage device (e.g., memory) implemented with ECC to detect any errors in the data. If an error is detected, the data scanning and correction system generates corrected data and rewrites the corrected data to the portion of the storage device. The data scanning and correction system may continuously cycle this process through different portions of the storage device to detect and correct errors while the storage device is in-service.

Embodiments of the present invention provide for diverse routing of a plurality of data streams, representative of a client signal of an unknown format, across multiple communication paths of a digital optical network through the use of a marker embedded in the client signal which is then inserted into the client payload portion of a transport frame. The multiple communication paths include different signal and path attributes related to the optical signals which transport the data streams across the digital optical network, as well as the physical structure of the digital optical network itself, all leading to timing variations in the multiple communication paths. The digital optical network transports the plurality of data streams in the form of wavelength division multiplexed signals, or banded wavelength division multiplexed signals.
