A method for cooling inlet air to a gas turbine is provided. For example, a method is described including passing inlet air through a cooling coil that includes an opening for receiving the inlet air and that is operably connected to a gas turbine power plant. The gas turbine power plant may include at least one gas turbine, and at least one gas turbine inlet which receives the inlet air. The method may further include passing circulating water through a water chiller at a first flow rate to reduce the temperature of the circulating water, the water chiller including a conduit through which the circulating water is capable of passing and passing the circulating water having the first flow rate through the cooling coil in an amount sufficient to lower the temperature of the inlet air. Additionally, the method may include reducing the flow rate of the circulating water passing through the water chiller, passing the circulating water through a water chiller at a second flow rate to reduce the temperature of the circulating water, the second flow rate being lower than the first flow rate, and passing the circulating water having the second flow rate through the cooling coil in an amount sufficient to lower the temperature of the inlet air.A system for cooling inlet air to a gas turbine is provided. In order to maintain a desired level of efficiency for a gas turbine plant, water is passed through a chiller to lower the water temperature. The cooled water is then circulated through coils disposed in the inlet air of the gas turbine, thereby cooling the inlet air to the gas turbine. The system may include a thermal energy storage tank for storing chilled water prior to circulation through the coils. The system may also utilize an air temperature set point selected to achieve a desired output or to meet load requirement for the gas turbine plant. The temperature or flow rate of the cooled water may be adjusted to achieve the selected air temperature set point.

Method of chilling inlet air for gas turbines

Disclosed herein are various systems and methods for producing mechanical power from a heat source. The system may include a heat recovery heat exchanger, a turbine, a condenser heat exchanger, and a liquid circulating pump, etc. In other embodiments, a desuperheater or an economizer, or both, may be employed. In one illustrative embodiment, the system comprises a first heat exchanger adapted to receive a fluid from a heat source and a working fluid, wherein, when the working fluid is passed through the first heat exchanger, the working fluid is converted to a vapor via heat transfer with the fluid from the heat source, at least one turbine adapted to receive the vapor, and an optional economizer heat exchanger adapted to receive exhaust vapor from the turbine and the working fluid, wherein a temperature of the working fluid is adapted to be increased via heat transfer with the exhaust vapor from the turbine prior to the introduction of the working fluid into the first heat exchanger. The system further comprises a condenser heat exchanger that is adapted to receive the exhaust vapor from the turbine after the exhaust vapor has passed through the optional economizer heat exchanger and a cooling fluid, wherein a temperature of the exhaust vapor is reduced via heat transfer with the cooling fluid, and a pump that is adapted to circulate the working fluid to the optional economizer heat exchanger.

Advanced power recovery and energy conversion systems and methods of using same

A method for cooling inlet air to a gas turbine is provided. For example, a method is described including passing inlet air through a cooling coil that includes an opening for receiving the inlet air and that is operably connected to a gas turbine power plant. The gas turbine power plant may include at least one gas turbine, and at least one gas turbine inlet which receives the inlet air. The method may further include passing circulating water through a water chiller at a first flow rate to reduce the temperature of the circulating water, the water chiller including a conduit through which the circulating water is capable of passing and passing the circulating water having the first flow rate through the cooling coil in an amount sufficient to lower the temperature of the inlet air. Additionally, the method may include reducing the flow rate of the circulating water passing through the water chiller, passing the circulating water through a water chiller at a second flow rate to reduce the temperature of the circulating water, the second flow rate being lower than the first flow rate, and passing the circulating water having the second flow rate through the cooling coil in an amount sufficient to lower the temperature of the inlet air.

In various illustrative examples, the system may include heat recovery heat exchangers, one or more turbines or expanders, a desuperheater heat exchanger, a condenser heat exchanger, a separator, an accumulator, and a liquid circulating pump, etc. In one example, a bypass desuperheater control valve may be employed. The system comprises a first heat exchanger adapted to receive a heating stream from a heat source after passing through a second heat exchanger and a second portion of a working fluid, wherein, the second portion of working fluid is converted to a hot liquid via heat transfer. An economizer heat exchanger that is adapted to receive a first portion of the working fluid and the hot discharge vapor from at least one turbine may also be provided. The first and second portions of the working fluid are recombined in a first flow mixer after passing through the economizer heat exchanger and first heat exchanger, respectively. A second heat exchanger is provided that receives the working fluid from the first flow mixer and a hot heating stream from a heat source and convert the working fluid to a hot vapor. The hot vapor from the second heat exchanger is supplied to at least one turbine after passing through a separator designed to insure no liquid enters the said at least one turbine or expander. The hot, high pressure vapor is expanded in the turbine to produce mechanical power on a shaft and is discharged as a hot, low pressure vapor.

Power recovery and energy conversion systems and methods of using same

Disclosed herein are various systems and methods for producing mechanical power from a heat source. In various illustrative examples, the system may include a heat recovery heat exchanger, a turbine, an economizer heat exchanger, a condenser heat exchanger, and a liquid circulating pump, etc. In other embodiments, a desuperheater may be employed. The system further comprises a condenser heat exchanger that is adapted to receive the exhaust vapor from the turbine after the exhaust vapor has passed through the economizer heat exchanger and a cooling fluid, wherein a temperature of the exhaust vapor is reduced via heat transfer with the cooling fluid, and a pump that is adapted to circulate the working fluid to the economizer heat exchanger.

Advanced heat recovery and energy conversion systems for power generation and pollution emissions reduction, and methods of using same

Disclosed is a packaged chilling system for providing chilled water to an air conditioning system for a building that includes: a duct system; an air handling system; and a water chilling system; wherein: the duct system is in operable communication with a building that has a plurality of rooms, at least one of the rooms having a sensor for detecting the room air temperature in the room, the duct system comprising at least one supply duct for directing low temperature air from the air handling system to the building and at least one return duct for directing high temperature air from the building to the air handling system; the air handling system includes a plurality of air handling units, each air handling unit comprising an air inlet for receiving high temperature air from the building, a cooling coil that includes at least one conduit through which chilled water flows, the cooling coil having multiple passes and positioned for heat transfer contact with the high temperature air, and a fan for increasing the velocity of air in the air handling unit; the water chilling system is installed at a location proximate the building, and is operably connected to the air handling system; and the water chilling system includes a moveable support structure comprising a support base on which a plurality of water chilling system components are affixed, the components including at least one water chiller for lowering the temperature of water from a high temperature to a low temperature. This packaged chilling system may also be used to provide chilled water to industrial processes such as chemical plants, automotive plants, textile mills, paper mills, computer cooling, and factory air-conditioning.

In a gas turbine power plant system having an air chiller for lowering the temperature of inlet air, a compressor for compressing the inlet air, a combustor for combusting the compressed air and fuel and a power turbine for providing useful power, a method and apparatus for chilling water delivered to the air chiller is provided, having a thermal water storage tank for storing chilling water, the tank having a bottom portion and a top portion, and a bottom inlet and a bottom outlet and a top inlet and a top outlet. A charge cycle is provided wherein the tank is filled with chilled water, and a discharge cycle is provided wherein the chilled water is fed to the air chiller, thereby chilling the inlet air to the power turbine.
