A method and system of communicating between a wireless network and a process control system communicatively coupled to a server, such as OPC. The server receives data from the wireless network, where the data is generated from an input/output data point within the wireless network. The server maps the data between the input/output data point and a data point placeholder within the process control system. The server writes the mapped data to the corresponding data point placeholder of the process control system via a process control interface, and the mapped data is provided to the process control system as process control data native to the process control system. Process control data may also be provided to the server, mapped between a data point placeholder of the process control system and an input/output data point of the wireless network, and written to the corresponding input/output data point.

An application programming interface schema, method and system for communicating between first and second application programming interfaces within a process control system includes processing a call from a first application programming interface for a data request, translating the data request from the first application programming interface into one or more methods of a unified application programming interface, and implementing the one or more methods of the unified application programming interface with a second application programming interface. A first unified layer receives a transmission request from a proprietary application programming interface, and translates the transmission request into one or more methods of a unified application programming interface. A second unified layer implements methods of the unified application programming interface with the wireless network application programming interface.

A disclosed example method includes obtaining user inputs to a first process control system, obtaining process inputs and first process outputs of the first process control system, providing the user inputs and the process inputs to a second process control system to operate the second process control system, obtaining second process outputs of the second process control system operated with the user inputs and the process inputs, and comparing the first and second process outputs to determine whether the second process control system is implemented as intended.

Disclosed herein are methods, apparatus and articles of manufacture for configuring a communication network associated with a plurality of wireless enabled field devices. The disclosed methods, apparatus and articles of manufacture may compare identification information associated with a wireless enabled field device to configuration database information. Configuration information associated with the wireless enabled field device may be retrieved based on the comparison of the identification information to the configuration database information. The retrieved configuration information is sent to the wireless enabled field device via at least one wireless communication link to configure the wireless enabled field device.

A method and system of communicating between a wireless network and a process control system communicatively coupled to a server via a process control system interface, such as OPC or a proprietary API. The wireless network may be a mesh network and the server may be a mesh server. The server receives data from the wireless network, where the data is generated from an input/output data point within the wireless network. The server maps the data between the input/output data point and a data point placeholder within the process control system. The server writes the mapped data to the corresponding data point placeholder of the process control system via the process control interface, and the mapped data is provided to the process control system as process control data native to the process control system. Process control data may also be provided to the server, mapped between a data point placeholder of the process control system and an input/output data point of the wireless network, and the mapped process control data is written to the corresponding input/output data point.

Apparatus and method for merging wireless data into an established process control system

A communication bus suitable for use in a hazardous area of a process plant includes a first transmission path adapted to communicate electrical signals in a first direction, and a second transmission path adapted to communicate electrical signals in a second direction. A safety device is coupled to each of the first and second transmission paths and includes a control unit adapted to detect a fault condition associated with the communication bus. The safety device further includes a switch unit adapted to interrupt the flow of electrical signals along each of the first and second transmission paths in response to the detected fault condition. In this manner, the detection circuitry of the communication bus automatically reduces or prevents the occurrence of sparks or arcing in the event of a fault condition associated with the communication bus.

Communication bus suitable for use in a hazardous area of a process plant

Disclosed herein are methods, apparatus and articles of manufacture for configuring a communication network associated with a plurality of wireless enabled field devices. A disclosed example method of establishing a communication network for use in a process control system having a controller and a plurality of wireless enabled field devices involves identifying a plurality of wireless communication links available for routing communications between the wirless enabled field devices and the controller. Each of the wireless enabled field devices is at least one of a sensor or an actuator. The example method also involves automatically assigning at least first and second ones of the plurality of wireless communication links to a first one of the wireless enabled field devices based on at least one predetermined signal criterion. The first wireless communication link wirelessly communicatively couples the first wireless enabled field device to a second wireless device. In addition, the second wireless communication link wirelessly communicatively couples the second wireless device to the controller.

A process plant includes a process control system having a safety system embedded therein. The integrated process control and safety system includes a host computer arranged to send and receive process level messages and safety level messages, a controller operatively connected to the host computer by a first communication network, at least one first input/output device adapted for operative communication with at least one process control field device, and at least one second input/output device adapted for operative communication with at least one safety-related field device. The first and second input/output devices are operatively connected to the controller via a second communication bus. The second input/output device includes a processor programmed to monitor both the process level messages and the safety level messages, to distinguish the process level messages from safety level messages, to select the safety level messages and to communicate with the safety-related field device based on the safety level messages.
