The optical module includes a main housing, a filter support component, which can affix an optical fiber, supported by a first attachment section, a light-emitting component supported by a second attachment section, a light-receiving component supported by a third attachment section, and first and second optical filters supported by a filter support component. The filter support component has a first surface and a second surface. The first optical filter is mounted on the first surface of the filter support component. The second optical filter is mounted on the second surface of the filter support component.

Optical module for bi-directional communication system

The optical module includes a main housing, a light-emitting component supported by a second attachment section, a light-receiving component and a filter support member supported by a third attachment section, and first and second optical filters supported by the filter support member. The filter support member has a first surface and a second surface. The first optical filter is mounted on the first surface of the filter support member. The second optical filter is mounted on the second surface of the filter support member.

The present invention is to provide an arrayed waveguide-embedded optical circuit with reduced loss at a groove and an optical functional element using for the arrayed waveguide-embedded optical circuit. The arrayed waveguide-embedded optical circuit according to the present invention comprises a waveguide, a groove formed across the waveguide and two or more spot-size transformer pairs whose members face each other across the groove.

Waveguide-embedded optical circuit and optical functional element used therein

The optical module includes a main housing to which the optical fiber can be attached and a light-emitting component and a light-receiving component attached to the main housing. At least a part of a surface of the main housing has an irregular pattern to enhance a thermal dissipation. Because at least part of the main housing comprises a heat sink, so the optical module itself has a very high heat dissipation property, eliminating the type of problems that arise when adhesive or the like is used to attach to the main housing heat sinks constituted as separate parts, such as the increase in the number of parts and the degradation in thermal conductivity to the heat sink caused by the adhesive.

Optical branching device

An optical waveguide module-mounted device that includes an optical waveguide module in a separation type case. The module includes an optical waveguide chip and a pair of optical fibers connected to the optical waveguide chip. The fibers are connected such that the optical axes of the chip and the fibers are aligned with each other. The separation type case has an optical-fiber lead-in portion and an optical-fiber lead-in groove. The optical-fiber lead-in portion has an optical-fiber open groove at open portion of the separation type case. The optical-fiber open groove leads the optical fiber out of the separation type case. The optical-fiber lead-in groove positions the optical fiber and is connected to the inner end of the open groove. The optical-fiber open groove is deeper than the optical-fiber lead-in groove.

Optical waveguide module-mounted device

An optical waveguide module-mounted package that includes an optical waveguide module in a separation type case. The module includes an optical waveguide chip and a pair of optical fibers, connected to said optical waveguide chip in the manner that the optical axes of said fibers and the chip are aligned with each other. The separation type case is formed by combining two identical half cases. Each half case has a mating surface with one or more recess-protrusion pairs for fitting. The recess and the protrusion the respective protrusion and recess of the combining partner.

Optical waveguide module-mounted package

A method of manufacturing a polarizing plate of a resonance absorption effect type wherein plural bar-like polarizing members are arranged in a light-transmittable polarizing matrix layer with major axes thereof orienting in a constant direction. The method includes a preparing process of a forming die for preparing a forming die having a concavoconvex pattern corresponding to a layout pattern of the bar-like polarizing members, a forming process of a concavoconvex pattern on a resin layer for forming a resin layer directly or indirectly on a substrate and pressing the forming die onto the resin layer so as to form a concavoconvex pattern on the resin layer, a forming process of bar-like polarizing members for forming the bar-like polarizing members in the foregoing layout pattern using the concavoconvex pattern of the resin layer, and a forming process of a polarizing matrix layer for forming the light-transmittable polarizing matrix layer so as to bury the formed bar-like polarizing members. Accordingly, the polarizing plate of the resonance absorption effect type can be obtained, which is low in price, massproducible, high in extinction ratio, high in performance and high in reliability.

Method of manufacturing polarizing plate

A polarizing plate includes a polarizing layer for controlling a light and producing a polarized light, the polarizing layer having a particle dispersing medium with a property of light transmission and bar-like polarizing particles which are dispersed in the particle dispersing medium and arranged in a constant direction with a magnetic field, where each of the bar-like polarizing particles is provided with a bar-like ferromagnetic particle of chromium dioxide, whose surface is coated with a conductive film.

Polarizing plate and method of manufacturing polarizing plate

A novel structure has, on a substrate a nonlinear optical thin film having a high .chi..sup.(3) value provided wherein metal fine particles are uniformly dispersed in a ferroelectric or highly dielectric matrix and heat treated whereby the metal fine particles and matrix are improved in crystallinity. The excitation wavelength can be substantially changed by a choice of the heat treating conditions. The crystallinity of the metal fine particles and matrix and .chi..sup.(3) value are improved by selecting a proper substrate or changing the heat treating procedure and conditions. The thin film is further improved in nonlinear optical properties, typically .chi..sup.(3) and .chi..sup.(3) /.alpha. values by using a perovskite type compound ABO.sub.3 having a specific A/B ratio as the matrix material and controlling film deposition conditions for improving the crystallinity of the matrix.

Nonlinear optical thin film

A novel nonlinear optical thin film having a high .chi..sup.(3) value is provided wherein metal fine particles are uniformly dispersed in a ferroelectric or highly dielectric matrix and heat treated whereby the metal fine particles and matrix are improved in crystallinity. The excitation wavelength can be substantially changed by a choice of the heat treating conditions. The crystallinity of the metal fine particles and matrix and .chi..sup.(3) value are improved by selecting a substrate used or changing the heat treating procedure and heat treating conditions. By forming a portion having a lower content of metal fine particles in a surface portion on an upper and/or lower side of the matrix, the excitation wavelength can be substantially changed and precisely adjusted.

A thermistor material comprising, in sintered form, (A) a matrix comprising aluminum oxide, silicon oxide, or the oxide of an element belonging to Group 2A in the Periodic Table, and (B) a conductive path forming substance comprising silicon carbide and/or boron carbide, wherein the volume ratio of silicon carbide to the matrix is up to about 1.24 is stable at elevated temperatures of 400.degree.-800.degree. C.
