A method for forming a part of deformed cross section with non-rotation symmetry on an end portion of a cylindrical workpiece. The method includes steps of performing a first relative motion of a roller against the workpiece toward its one open end, and performing a second relative motion of the roller against at least a part of outer peripheral surface of the end portion of the workpiece toward the inside thereof, while the roller is rotated relative to the workpiece by one rotation, in such a state as being held to be in contact with the end portion, in a plane which is perpendicular to the moving direction of the first relative motion, and which includes a position where the roller contacts the outer peripheral surface of the end portion, and performing a rotational motion of the roller relatively rotating around the workpiece, while performing the second relative motion, with the roller being held to be in contact with the outer peripheral surface of the end portion. The first relative motion is performed up to a position exceeding the one open end, while repeating the second relative motion and the rotational motion.

The present invention is directed to a method for producing a fluid treatment device having a honeycomb member in a metallic cylindrical housing with a shock absorbent member wrapped around the honeycomb member. The method comprises the steps of (1) inserting the honeycomb member with the shock absorbent member wrapped around the honeycomb member, into the cylindrical housing, (2) forming a necking portion on at least one end portion of the cylindrical housing, with a body portion thereof being clamped, and (3) reducing a diameter of at least a part of the cylindrical housing with the shock absorbent member received therein, together with the shock absorbent member, to such an extent that a desired inner diameter of the part of the cylindrical housing is provided enough to cause the shock absorbent member to produce a desired holding pressure for holding the honeycomb member in the cylindrical housing.

The present invention is directed to a method of producing a container such as a catalytic converter for holding a fragile substrate in a cylindrical housing with a shock absorbent member wrapped around the substrate, with an appropriate holding force determined on the basis of frictional force between the shock absorbent member and the one with the smaller coefficient of friction out of the substrate and the cylindrical housing. The method comprises the steps of (1) inserting the substrate with the shock absorbent member wrapped around the substrate, into the cylindrical housing loosely, (2) applying an axial load to the substrate so as to move the substrate along a longitudinal axis of the cylindrical housing by a predetermined distance, monitoring the axial load applied to the substrate, and (3) reducing a diameter of at least a part of the cylindrical housing with the substrate held therein along the longitudinal axis of the cylindrical housing, with the shock absorbent member being compressed, to such an extent that the axial load equals a predetermined value.

A method and apparatus for processing a portion of a workpiece. At least one roller is supported on a rotatable member rotatable about a main axis to be radially moved to and from the main axis. The workpiece is supported so that a central axis of the portion to be processed is aligned with one of a plurality of forming target axes. A plurality of forming target axes are provided on the basis of a plurality of target processed portions of the workpiece changed from the unprocessed portion to a final target changed diameter portion of the workpiece with a central axis thereof being at least one of offset from, oblique to and skewed from a central axis of the unprocessed portion. Then, at least one of the work piece and the roller is driven to be rotated relative to each other about each forming target axis, while the roller is moved radially toward each forming target axis of the plurality of forming target axes, with the roller being in substantial contact with a surface of the portion to be processed. As a result, the portion to be processed is formed into the final target changed diameter portion. Furthermore, opposite end portions of the workpiece may be processed sequentially.

A method and apparatus for processing a portion of a workpiece. At least one roller is supported on a rotatable member rotatable about a main axis to be radially moved to and from the main axis. The workpiece is supported to position a central axis of the portion to be processed at least one of offset from and oblique to a forming target axis overlapping the main axis. Then, at least one of the workpiece and the roller is driven to be rotated relative to each other about the forming target axis, while the roller is moved radially toward the forming target axis, with the roller being in substantial contact with a surface of the portion to be processed. A method and apparatus for forming an end portion of a cylindrical member or cylinder includes at least one roller supported on a main shaft to be radially moved to and from the main shaft. The cylinder is supported to position the central axis thereof on the plane including the main shaft. Then, at least one of the cylinder and the roller is driven to be rotated relative to each other about an oblique axis inclined against the central axis of the cylinder, while the roller is moved radially toward the oblique axis, with the roller being in substantial contact with the outer surface of the one end portion of the cylinder. As a result, the one end portion of the cylinder is formed into a reduced diameter portion such as a tapered portion having the oblique axis.
