A microparticulate abrasive composition is comprised of chilsonated granules of a low oil absorption compound selected from the group consisting of sodium tetrapyrophosphate, dicalcium phosphate dihydrate, anhydrous dicalcium phosphate, and mixtures thereof. The abrasive composition is useful as a polishing agent and plaque and tartar removing agent in oral dentifrice compositions such as toothpastes, as well as a soft scrubbing agent for delicate hard surfaces, facial masks, and body soaps.

This invention provides a single-phase aqueous solution of a zinc-polyamine complex which is stable and has a clear transparency. The aqueous solution can be incorporated as a component of an oral care product such as a mouthwash or toothpaste. The zinc-polyamine complex enhances the control of oral malodor, plaque, calculus and gingivitis in dental applications, and decreases the astringency and metallic taste which is characteristic of zinc ions in an oral cavity.

The disclosure describes deodorant soap or detergent compositions comprising a surfactant, e.g., a soap or synthetic detergent, and as a deodorizing component, a minor amount of a sodium zinc carbonate hydrate complex salt. The latter salt may be prepared by reacting zinc oxide and sodium bicarbonate in the presence of water.

Zinc oxide particles, preferably agglomerated, are added to dentifrices such as toothpastes, tooth gels, or tooth powders to inhibit the formation of plaque. The dentifrices contain sodium bicarbonate and other conventional ingredients such as thickeners, anti-calculus agents such as a pyrophosphate salts, anti-caries agents such as sodium fluoride, flavorings, sweetening agents, and/or secondary abrasives.

A dentifrice for inhibiting calculus formation, comprising sodium bicarbonate, one or more alkali metal pyrophosphate salts, a soluble fluoride ion source and other adjuvants, in admixture with a buffering agent selected from among an alkali metal orthophosphate, o-phosphoric acid, an alkali metal glycerophosphate, tri(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane, tartaric acid or citric acid. The buffering agent is incorporated in the dentifrice in an amount of from about 0.1 to 2.5% by weight, sufficient to buffer the pH of the dentifrice to a value within the range of from about pH 8.2 to 8.9. The thus buffered dentifrice is subject to decreased risk of irritation of the oral mucosa or desquamation, as compared with dentifrices excluding such a buffering agent.
