A scroll compressor includes a non-orbiting scroll having a plurality of radially extending ribs on its rear face. The non-orbiting scroll preferably provides a separating function separating the interior of the sealed housing of the compressor into the discharge and suction pressure chambers. The ribs extend from a central portion of the base of the non-orbiting scroll to its outer peripheral surface. A circumferentially extending rib also connects the plural radially extending ribs.

An improved heat shield for a scroll compressor is provided with a non-cylindrical end portion caught between the end cap and the non-orbiting scroll. In several embodiments, the portion provides a seal between the discharge chamber and a suction chamber. In one embodiment the portion of the heat shield is serpentine. In another embodiment the portion of the heat shield is generally u-shaped. In further embodiments the portion includes a plurality of circumferentially spaced clips. Several other embodiments are also disclosed.

An improved check valve for a scroll compressor has a stop body which has a contact face which is reduced in surface area to reduce the stiction or holding force holding the valve at shut down. In this way, the valve is allowed to move to its closed position more rapidly.

A scroll compressor has a unique oil supply port for supplying lubricant to both the seals and the Oldham coupling. The oil supply port is positioned at a location such that it will not likely result in undue amounts of lubricant being entrained into the refrigerant leading into the compression chambers. The present invention is thus an improvement over the prior art.

A scroll compressor includes a non-orbiting scroll wherein the base is sealed to the housing. That is, the non-orbiting scroll provides the function of the scroll member, and also the function typically provided by a separator. A heat shield is positioned between the discharge pressure chamber and the base of the non-orbiting scroll. Leakage paths are provided to allow refrigerant to communicate between the discharge pressure chamber and spaces between the heat shield and the non-orbiting scroll.

A valve return passage for quickly returning a valve to a closed position, includes return passages for communicating discharge pressurized fluid to a rear surface of a floating valve. The use of the return passages ensures that pressurized gas is communicated quickly to close the valve at shut down. This reduces the noise of operation of the compressor.
