A speckle-enhanced discrete Fourier transform spectrometer can include waveguides configured to combine speckle spectroscopy techniques with discrete Fourier transform spectroscopy techniques. A discrete Fourier transform spectrometer section can be a compact, passive, chip-scale optical spectrometer. A speckle spectrometer section can include a multi-mode wave guide. An interference region can be in optical communication with both the discrete Fourier transform spectrometer section and the speckle spectrometer section such that light from both sections interfere in the interference region. A detector can be used to detect light from the interference region for detecting spectral content of light over a large bandwidth at a high resolution.

A time domain filter receives a double sideband (DSB) input in the frequency domain and compresses this input into a time domain signal filtered by a time gate for providing a time filtered signal that is then expanded back into the frequency domain as a single sideband (SSB) output with one sideband being filtered by the time gate for translating DSB signals into SSB signals well suited for communicating chirped modulated signals as SSB signals along an electrical line or optical fiber without dispersive nulling of the communicated signal.

Time-domain gated filter for RF communication systems

The invention is a solid state laser resonator or amplifier which employs a longitudinal pumping scheme that provides efficient coupling of greater than 90 percent from the output of one or more high power diode bar arrays. The pumping scheme involves the use of monolithic microlens arrays that match the geometry of the laser diode bar arrays in a one to one manner. The output of each element in the diode bar is collimated by a single microlens in the array. The resultant array of collimated light beams is then configured to overlap by a second macroscopic lens, resulting in a single uniform spot within the laser gain medium. The resultant spot is also configured to overlap with the TEM.sub.00 mode of the laser resonator so that efficient lasing action may occur. Overlapping the pump spot and the laser mode may be interpreted as having the pump spot size be less than or equal to the laser mode size so that all the pump light is absorbed within the mode of the laser.
