A device including an enclosure that encapsulates a plurality of particles dispersed in a matrix material. The particles are formed of a material having substantial bulk thermal conductivity of at least about one watt per meter-Kelvin (1 W/[mK]) at a standardized measurement temperature of about 68&#xb0; F. In the device, the enclosure is configured upon deformation to allow a portion of the matrix material to escape while retaining at least a portion of the particles within the enclosure. A system that includes an enclosure that encapsulates a plurality of such particles dispersed in a matrix material, the enclosure being located between first and second objects. In the system, the enclosure has through-pores communicating between an interior of the enclosure and an exterior of the enclosure, and at least a portion of the particles have diameters that are larger than a maximum diameter of the through-pores.

Thermal interface device

A solar thermoelectric generator (STEG) is disclosed. A STEG includes a thermoelectric generator (TEG) configured to convert light energy from solar light into electrical energy, and a heat transfer structure coupled to the TEG where a portion of the heat transfer structure is configured to be embedded in the earth. The TEG includes a first side and a second side, wherein the solar light is incident on the first side of the TEG and the heat transfer structure is configured to provide cooling for the second side of the TEG using geothermal cooling. The use of geothermal cooling to provide cooling for the second side of the TEG increases the temperature difference across the TEG of the STEG, thereby increasing the net generation efficiency of the STEG.

Geothermally-cooled solar thermoelectric energy harvester

An apparatus comprising a first substrate having a first surface, a second substrate having a second surface facing the first surface and an array of metallic raised features being in contact with the first surface to the second surface, a portion of the raised features having a mechanical bend or buckle plastic deformation produced therein via a compressive force. One or more of the metallic raised features has one or more surface singularities therein prior to the mechanical bend or the buckle plastic deformation produced by the compressive force.

An apparatus comprising a rack having a row of shelves, each shelf supporting an electronics circuit board, each one of the circuit boards being manually removable from the shelve supporting the one of the circuit boards and having a local heat source thereon. The apparatus also comprises a cooler attached to the rack and being able to circulate a cooling fluid around a channel forming a closed loop. The apparatus further comprises a plurality of heat conduits, each heat conduit being located over a corresponding one of the circuit boards and forming a path to transport heat from the local heat source of the corresponding one of the circuit boards to the cooler. Each heat conduit is configured to be manually detachable from the cooler or the circuit board, without breaking a circulation pathway of the fluid through the cooler.

Mechanically-reattachable liquid-cooled cooling apparatus

A method of manufacture comprising forming a plurality of cells on a substrate, wherein each of the cells has at least one dimension that is less than about 1 millimeter and is configured to hold a medium therein, and wherein each of the cells has walls that laterally enclose an area of a surface of the substrate and has a top opening. The method also comprises contacting the cells with a fluid and introducing a surfactant and a medium into the fluid to thereby form a foam layer contacting the walls of cells. Bubbles of the foam layer have fluid walls that include the surfactant, the bubbles are filled with the medium, and the bubbles remain substantially stationary on the top openings of the cells for a period on average of at least about 1 minute.

Method of manufacturing closed-cell surfaces with advanced drag-reduction properties

A method of controlling the flow resistance of a fluid disposed on a surface of a substrate. The method comprises contacting a fluid with a plurality of cells on a substrate and adjusting amounts of a surfactant and a medium in the fluid to thereby form a foam layer contacting the walls of the cells. Each of the cells has at least one dimension that is less than about 1 millimeter and is configured to hold the medium therein. Each of the cells has walls that laterally enclose an area of a surface of the substrate and has a top opening. Bubbles of the foam layer have fluid walls that include a surfactant, are filled with the medium, and remain substantially stationary on the top openings of the cells for a period on average of at least about 1 minute.

Method of using closed cell surfaces with enhanced drag-reduction properties

Device including channel having channel input and output. Channel has interior channel surface extending along channel path from channel input to output. In one implementation, channel includes plurality of channel sections in serial communication along channel path. Each of channel sections includes first internal circumference spaced apart along channel path from second internal circumference, in each of channel sections the first and second internal circumferences being substantially different. Each of channel sections includes sub-surface of interior channel surface. At least region of sub-surface of each channel section includes distribution of raised micro-scale features. Each raised barrier extends on interior channel surface in directions partially transverse to and partially parallel to longitudinal axis. Method also provided.

An improved apparatus and system are provided for heat dissipation in a bank of circuit components using heat pipes and/or vapor chambers, wherein the heat pipes and/or vapor chambers efficiently transport heat away from high heat components.

An apparatuscomprising a radiofrequency filter body housing. The radiofrequency filter body housing includes a polymeric compositionthat includes at least one polymer foamand filler material. The filler material is uniformly distributed and randomly oriented throughout the polymeric composition. Light-weight low-thermal-expansion polymer foam for radiofrequency filtering applications

Device having first wick evaporator including first membrane and plurality of first thermally-conductive supports. First membrane has upper and lower surfaces. First membrane also has plurality of pores with upper pore ends at upper surface of first membrane and with lower pore ends at lower surface of first membrane. Each of first thermally-conductive supports has upper and lower support ends. Upper support ends of first thermally-conductive supports are in contact with first membrane. Each of first thermally-conductive supports has longitudinal axis extending between the upper and lower support ends, average cross-sectional area along axis, and membrane support cross-sectional area at upper support end, the membrane support cross-sectional area effectively being smaller than average cross-sectional area. First thermally-conductive supports are configured to conduct thermal energy from lower support ends of first thermally-conductive supports to first membrane. Process includes providing wick evaporator, providing liquid working fluid in contact with lower or upper surface of membrane, and causing liquid working fluid to be evaporated from liquid-vapor interface in membrane.

Thermal energy transfer device

An apparatus, comprising a plurality of closed cells disposed on a surface of a substrate. Each of the closed cells has at least one dimension that is less than about 1 millimeter and are configured to hold a medium therein. The apparatus also comprises a foam that contacts the closed cells. The foam has fluid walls that include a surfactant, and bubbles of the foam layer are filled with the medium.

Closed cell surfaces with enhanced drag-reduction properties

Techniques for heat transfer are provided. In one aspect of the invention, a heat-transfer device is provided. The heat-transfer device comprises one or more microchannels suitable for containing a heat-transfer fluid, one or more of the microchannels having protruding structures on at least one inner surface thereof configured to affect flow of the heat-transfer fluid through the one or more microchannels. The structures may comprise posts coated with a hydrophobic coating.

Techniques for microchannel cooling

Wide range linear tuning of optical gratings is possible by selecting a thin film heater such that the temperature variation in heater's resistivity &#x3c1; matches the temperature variation in the heat transfer coefficient of air h. A tunable optical device, such as a fiber grating with such a grating heater, exhibits near linear tuning characteristics over a wide range of temperatures and tuning currents. The heater is useable in other heat tunable optical devices such as interferometers.

Heat tunable optical devices with linearity compensation

A continuous extrusion process is provided capable of producing graded index plastic optical fiber at commercially useful speeds, e.g., at least 1 m/sec for 250 &mgr;m outer diameter fiber. Moreover, it is possible to predict the refractive index profile of the fiber, prior to actual fabrication, by performing a finite element analysis using various parameters of the extrusion process. Such prediction allows one to tune the parameters of the process to obtain a desirable outcome, while avoiding the need for substantial trial and error with the extrusion equipment.
