A system for generating steam for industrial heat. The system may include a plurality of heat pump cycles in thermal communication with each other and in thermal communication with a steam generation cycle. The plurality of heat pump cycles may include first and second heat pump cycles. The first heat pump circulates a first a working fluid and includes a first heat exchanger. The second heat pump cycle circulates a second working fluid and includes a second heat exchanger. The first heat exchanger transfers heat from the first to the second working fluid. The second heat exchanger transfers heat to a third working fluid in the steam generation cycle.

Air source heat pump system and method of use for industrial steam generation

A power plant system is disclosed. The power plant system includes a combustor configured, a turbine configured to generate electricity, a heat exchanger and a steam turbine, a carbon capture system configured to remove at least a portion of carbon-based gasses from the flue gas downstream from the heat recovery steam generator, and a thermal storage system including a hot storage unit configured to store thermal energy at a hot temperature, the hot temperature greater than ambient temperature. The power plant is configured to operate in at least a first mode for storing thermal energy in the thermal storage system and a second mode for releasing the stored thermal energy from the thermal storage system and during the second mode, heat stored in the hot storage unit is transferred to the carbon capture system.

Synergistic heat pumped thermal storage and flexible carbon capture system

The present disclosure relates to a laser diode system. The system may have at least one laser diode emitter having a substrate, at least one laser diode supported on the substrate, and a facet which a laser beam generated by the laser diode is emitted. A cooling subsystem is included which is disposed in contact with the substrate of the laser diode emitter. The cooling subsystem includes a plurality of cooling fins forming a plurality of elongated channels for circulating a cooling fluid therethrough to cool the laser diode emitter. The cooling fluid also flows over the facet of the laser diode emitter.

Adsorption cooling system using metal organic frameworks

Aspects of the present disclosure include a system for turbo-compression cooling. The system may be aboard a marine vessel. The system includes a power cycle and a cooling cycle. The power cycle includes a first working fluid, a waste heat boiler configured to evaporate the working fluid, a turbine, and a condenser. The condenser condenses the working fluid to a saturated or subcooled liquid. The cooling cycle includes a second working fluid, a first compressor configured to increase the pressure of the second working fluid, a condenser configured to condense the second working fluid to a saturated or subcooled liquid after exiting the first compressor, an expansion valve, and an evaporator. The turbine and first compressor are coupled one to the other. The waste heat boiler receives waste heat from engine jacket water and lubricating oil from a ship service generator. The evaporator cools water in a shipboard cooling loop.

Ultra efficient turbo-compression cooling systems

A hybrid stationary power generator is provided. The system is fueled from natural gas and based on SOFCs and high efficiency, internal combustion (IC) engine technologies is conceived to generate electric power at 100-kW scale with an efficiency of 71% and a capital cost of &#x3c;900 $/kW. This novel system integrates a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) stack with a high efficiency stationary engine and balance-of-plant (BOP) equipment to create a hybrid power system.

Illustrative embodiments disclosed herein pertain to a cooling apparatus that includes a distributor plate and a conduit assembly. The conduit assembly allows a cooling fluid to flow downwards through a first set of holes in the distributor plate and onto a hot object placed below the distributor plate. The cooling fluid then flows upwards from the hot object into a second set of holes in the distributor plate. The first set of holes are shaped to offer a pressure increase to the cooling fluid flowing towards the hot object. The second set of holes are shaped to offer reduced resistance to the cooling fluid flowing away from the hot object. The distributor plate and the conduit assembly are fabricated from a material that is a heat insulator thereby preventing heat transfer from the cooling fluid flowing away from the hot object to the cooling fluid flowing towards the hot object.

Cooling apparatus and methods of use

A turbo-compression cooling system includes a power cycle and a cooling cycle coupled one to the other. The power cycle implements a waste heat waste heat exchanger configured to evaporate a first working fluid and a turbine configured to receive the evaporated working fluid. The turbine is configured to rotate as the first working fluid expands to a lower pressure. A condenser condenses the first working fluid to a saturated liquid and a pump pumps the saturated liquid to the waste heat waste heat exchanger. The cooling cycle implements a compressor increasing the pressure of a second working fluid, a condenser condensing the second working fluid to a saturated liquid upon exiting the compressor, an expansion valve expanding the second working fluid to a lower pressure, and an evaporator rejecting heat from a circulating fluid to the second working fluid, thereby cooling the circulating fluid.

Ultra efficient turbo-compression cooling

The high thermal conduction resistances of a lithium-ion battery (LIB) severely limit the effectiveness of a conventional external thermal management system (TMS). A method for a new thermal management system for lithium-ion batteries that utilizes a multi-functional electrolyte (MFE) to remove heat locally inside the cell by evaporating a volatile component of the MFE is disclosed. These new electrolyte mixtures comprise a high vapor pressure co-solvent. The characteristics of a previously unstudied high vapor pressure co-solvent HFE-7000 (65 kPa at 25&#xb0; C.) in an MFE (1 M LiTFSI in 1:1 HFE-7000/EMC), and other possible MFE compositions that can be utilized in a custom electrolyte boiling facility, are disclosed.

Multi-functional electrolyte for thermal management of lithium-ion batteries

A laser diode package includes a heat pipe having a fluid chamber enclosed in part by a heat exchange wall for containing a fluid. Wicking channels in the fluid chamber is adapted to wick a liquid phase of the fluid from a condensing section of the heat pipe to an evaporating section of the heat exchanger, and a laser diode is connected to the heat exchange wall at the evaporating section of the heat exchanger so that heat produced by the laser diode is removed isothermally from the evaporating section to the condensing section by a liquid-to-vapor phase change of the fluid.

High flux diode packaging using passive microscale liquid-vapor phase change

A thermal management system is integral to a battery pack and/or individual cells. It relies on passive liquid-vapor phase change heat removal to provide enhanced thermal protection via rapid expulsion of inert high pressure refrigerant during abnormal abuse events and can be integrated with a cooling system that operates during normal operation. When a thermal runaway event occurs and sensed by either active or passive sensors, the high pressure refrigerant is preferentially ejected through strategically placed passages within the pack to rapidly quench the battery.

Battery management systems with thermally integrated fire suppression

A battery management system with thermally integrated fire suppression includes a multiplicity of individual battery cells in a housing; a multiplicity of cooling passages in the housing within or between the multiplicity of individual battery cells; a multiplicity of sensors operably connected to the individual battery cells, the sensors adapted to detect a thermal runaway event related to one or more of the multiplicity of individual battery cells; and a management system adapted to inject coolant into at least one of the multiplicity of cooling passages upon the detection of the thermal runaway event by the any one of the multiplicity of sensors, so that the thermal runaway event is rapidly quenched.
