An elbow terminator has a socket in which an electrical probe is disposed. The terminator is insertable onto an electrical bushing such that a tongue of the bushing is received in the socket of the terminator, and the probe of the terminator is electrically coupled to a contact sleeve disposed within the tongue. A latching mechanism produces positive latching between the tongue and socket when the tongue has been inserted to a predescribed depth within the socket. In order to enable an operator to visually observe that the tongue has been inserted to the prescribed depth, the bushing carries a color band which becomes completely disposed (invisible) in the socket when positive latching occurs. Alternatively, the bushing can be provided with gauge tabs which become aligned with a witness line formed on the terminator when positive latching occurs.

An attachment for a tool used to attach and remove load break elbows and protective caps from bushings disposed on a transformer is provided. The tool attachment includes an elbow engaging member that is positionable around a load break elbow or cap fixed to a bushing. The engagement member is fixedly secured to a horizontal bar that includes a number of aligned openings extending through the bar. These openings are selectively alignable with a pair of openings disposed on a vertical bar to pivotally attach the vertical and horizontal bars to one another. The vertical bar also includes an opening through which a pulling eye on the elbow or cap can extend when the tool attachment is positioned on the elbow or cap. A conventional pulling tool can be attached to the eye as it extends through the vertical bar and utilized in conjunction with a pulling rope secured to the vertical bar opposite the pivoting connection in order to quickly and easily remove the elbow or attach the elbow to a bushing without causing extended arcing.

A step assembly is provided that can be easily slipped into a utility pole opening and locked in place, and then easily removed after use. The step assembly includes 1) a step member having first and second legs, which are connected at one end and open at the opposite end and 2) a lever member that is rotatably attached to the step member and that urges the first and second legs apart. The free end of the legs include tabs protruding upwardly. The step assembly is inserted into the utility pole opening by pressing the legs toward each other. The step assembly is then inserted into the opening. The legs are released such that the legs spread apart and press against the opening's sides. The lever member is then rotated, forcing the enlarged portion between the legs of the step assembly to lock the step assembly in place.

An interrupt assembly for a primary circuit breaker of a distribution transformer includes an elongated housing that is divided into separate chambers for holding insulating fluid that extinguish an arc generated when a high-voltage electrical path between two breaker contacts is broken. The elongated housing includes openings that allow for the rapid exit of the expanding gases generated as a result of the arc. Consequently, the separately held insulating fluid in each chamber presents a strong dielectric property to the arc, causing it to extinguish rapidly.

An electric device, such as a transformer, has a tank and an arrester for protection against high voltage surges, the arrester being grounded to a wall of the tank. A switch is mounted in the tank wall for enabling the ground connection to be disconnected from outside the tank. The switch includes a shaft extending slidably through an opening in the tank wall. A gripping handle is mounted on an outer end of the shaft, and a spring washer is mounted on an inner end of the shaft. The spring washer is electrically connected to a discharge side of the arrester and is movable toward the wall and into electrically conductive relationship therewith in response to sliding of the shaft. By sliding the shaft in a direction moving the washer away from the wall, the electrical connection is broken. The handle is threadedly mounted to the shaft to be reversible between a first position holding the shaft in its switch closed position, and a second position for enabling the shaft to be slid to its switch open position.

The electrical connector of the present invention includes an electrically conductive sleeve having a passage therethrough and an elastomeric housing molded therearound. After the molding of the housing around the sleeve, a contact element is disposed within the passage of the sleeve for engagement with the contact member of another connector. An arc snuffer housing and arc snuffer are attached to one end of the contact element for guiding the contact member toward the contact element and for evolving an arc-quenching gas in response to an arc being struck between the contact member and the contact element. The contact element includes a piston member responsive to the evolved gas for jointly displacing within said passage the arc snuffer and contact element toward the contact member. A support member is provided within the sleeve for reciprocably supporting the piston member of the contact element. The piston member includes a friction surface to inhibit the movement of the piston member within the conductive sleeve until a pre-determined pressure is achieved by the arc-quenching gas and for electrically engaging the piston member with the conductive sleeve for providing electrical continuity therebetween. The support means includes a stop and a plurality of restrictions to inhibit and stop the longitudinal movement of the piston member.

A device electrically interconnects a high voltage cable to a bushing of a deadfront electrical apparatus or switchgear. The device comprises a feed-through bushing and a separate U-member. The U-member can be installed onto, or removed from, the bushings without having to disconnect the ground. A driver mechanism applies a force to the U-member at a location substantially midway between two parallel legs of the U-member for installing or removing the U-member without cocking of the legs. The U-member carries female contacts which are engageable with male contacts of the bushings.

The electrical connector of the present invention includes an electrically conductive sleeve having a passage therethrough and an elastomeric housing molded therearound. After the molding of the housing around the sleeve, contact element is disposed within the passage of the sleeve for engagement with the contact member of another connector. An arc snuffer housing and arc snuffer are attached to one end of the contact element for guiding the contact member toward the contact element and for evolving an arc-quenching gas in response to an arc being struck between the contact member and the contact element. The contact element includes a piston member responsive to the evolved gas for jointly displacing within said passage the arc snuffer and contact element toward the contact member. A support member is provided within the sleeve for reciprocably supporting the piston member of the contact element.
