Provided is a lapping carrier including a base carrier having a first major surface, a second major surface and at least one aperture for holding a workpiece. The aperture extends from the first major surface through the base carrier to the second major surface. The base carrier includes a first metal or a polymer. At least a portion of the first major surface or at least a portion of each of the first and the second major surfaces includes a polymeric region. In at least a portion of the polymeric region, at least one adhesion promoting layer is interposed between the polymeric region and the base carrier. The adhesion promoting layer includes an inorganic coating.

Provided is a double-sided lapping carrier comprising a base carrier having a first major surface, a second major surface and at least one aperture for holding a workpiece, said aperture extending from the first major surface through the base carrier to the second major surface, wherein the base carrier comprises a first metal, the circumference of said aperture is defined by a third surface of the base carrier consisting of the first metal and, at least a portion of the first major surface or at least a portion of each of the first and the second major surfaces comprises a polymeric region, said polymeric region comprising a polymer having a work to failure of at least 10 Joules. The present invention is a fixed abrasive article for grinding or polishing the surface of a glass workpiece. The abrasive article for grinding glass has abrasive composites containing agglomerates having diamond particles, and optionally other abrasive particles. The abrasive composites are integrally molded to a backing. The abrasive articles, when used to grind glass, provides a high stock removal rate but provides a smooth surface finish. Lubricant can be used to improve the grinding characteristics of the abrasive article.

Abrasive article and methods for grinding glass

The present invention is a fixed abrasive article for grinding or polishing the surface of a glass workpiece. The abrasive article for grinding glass has abrasive composites containing a binder, an alkaline metal salt, and diamond abrasive particles or agglomerate particles comprising diamond particles, the composites integrally molded to a backing. The abrasive article for grinding glass is capable of removing between about 200 and 400 micrometers of glass using an RPP procedure having a polish time interval of between 10 and 15 seconds, generally about 12 seconds. The abrasive article for polishing glass comprises a backing containing fibers, and a plurality of abrasive composites integrally molded to the backing comprising an organic resin, ceria abrasive particles, and alkaline metal salt. The abrasive articles for polishing glass also provide an optimum rate of breakdown of the abrasive composites and improved adhesion between the abrasive composites and the backing.

Abrasive article and method of grinding glass

An abrasive article is provided which comprises a backing; and at least one three-dimensional abrasive coating comprising diamond particles dispersed within a binder bonded to a surface of the backing, the binder comprising a cured binder precursor including a urethane acrylate oligomer. The abrasive article is capable of rapid glass stock removal coupled with reducing the surface finish as indicated by reduced Ra values using an RPP test procedure.

A method for polishing a glass workpiece is provided that includes contacting the glass workpiece having an initial Ra with an abrasive article comprising a three-dimensional abrasive coating bonded to a backing, applying a liquid at an interface between the glass workpiece and the abrasive article; moving the glass workpiece and the abrasive article relative to one another; and reducing the initial Ra to a final Ra. The abrasive articles are capable of rapid removal of glass stock from a glass test blank and reducing the surface finish using an RPP test procedure.
