Embodiments are described for separating collecting components from a multi-component fluid such as whole blood. Some embodiments provide for controlling the amount of a component, such as platelets, introduced into a separation chamber to ensure that the density of fluid in the separation chamber does not exceed a particular value. This may provide for collecting purer components. Other embodiments may provide for determining a chamber flow rate based on a concentration of a component in the multi-component fluid, which may then be used to determine a centrifuge speed, to collect purer concentrated components.

Collecting components of a fluid

Embodiments are described for separating/collecting components from a multi-component fluid such as whole blood. Some embodiments provide for controlling the amount of a component, such as platelets, introduced into a separation chamber to ensure that the density of fluid in the separation chamber does not exceed a particular value. This may provide for collecting purer components. Other embodiments may provide for determining a chamber flow rate based on a concentration of a component in the multi-component fluid, which may then be used to determine a centrifuge speed, to collect purer concentrated components.

A centrifugal blood processing apparatus comprising a centrifuge rotor, a separation chamber, a tubing set for conducting blood components and fluids and having an inlet line, and an outlet line. Apparatus tests flow conditions using a red light-green light sensor to detect non-recoverable hemolysis during priming by identifying a high R/G ratio, preferably a ratio of greater than or equal to fifty (50), prior to the beginning of the first return of blood components to a donor followed by identifying a R/G ratio at least as great as one and one tenth (1.1) together with a green signal less than a predetermined value, preferably less than or equal to one thousand (1000) reflectance units. If these conditions are detected, an alarm is given and the apheresis procedure is discontinued.

Methods for hemolysis detection in centrifugal blood separator

A system and method are disclosed for separating particles having different sedimentation velocities. The system includes a container containing a binding substance including first particles and ligands attached to the first particles. When the binding substance is mixed with a liquid carrying at least second and third particles, the ligands bind the first and second particles together to form groups of bound particles. The groups of bound particles are separated from the third particles in a fluid chamber configured to be mounted on a centrifuge rotor. One of the disclosed methods includes forming a saturated fluidized bed of particles to retain the particles groups in the fluid chamber. Another of the disclosed methods includes removing at least some of the first particles after the binding substance is mixed with the liquid carrying second and third particles.

Method for using ligands in particle separation

A system and method are disclosed for separating particles having different sedimentation velocities. The system includes a fluid chamber for separating the particles form one another. Conduits are provided for flowing liquid carrying particles to the fluid chamber and for mixing the liquid with a diluting liquid. Structure is also provided for separating particles from the liquids after the particles are separated in the fluid chamber. The disclosed methods include forming a saturated fluidized bed of first particles to retain second particles in the fluid chamber. A diluting liquid having a density less than that of the particles is mixed with the liquid carrying particles to reduce overall density of substances in the fluid chamber and thereby reduce Coriolis jetting of liquids in the fluid chamber.

Methods for separation of particles

A method and device for sampling biological fluids during collection without opening the functionally closed collection system, thereby compromising the sterility of the collected fluid. A sample bag connected to a fluid line or collection reservoir is filled coincident with fluid collection, then hermetically sealed and physically separated from the collection system using a radio frequency tubing sealer. A vacuum tube collection device is attached to the sample bag to minimize exposure to the fluid during sample handling and processing.
