A portable fuel tank includes a recess formed in a top wall that accommodates a fuel/water separator canister. The canister includes an inlet in fluid communication with liquid fuel in the enclosure and an outlet in fluid communication with a motor. The canister retains water separated from the fuel. A fuel intake tube is disposed within the tank and a fuel inlet conduit is disposed externally of the tank. The fuel inlet conduit has a first end in fluid communication with the fuel intake tube and a second end in fluid communication with an inlet of the canister. A manifold includes a first branch providing fluid communication between the fuel inlet conduit and the canister inlet and a second branch providing fluid communication between the canister outlet and a fuel outlet conduit that supplies water-free fuel to a motor.

Water separator for small boat fuel systems

A watercraft cockpit includes a floor, sidewalls and forward and rearward bulkheads. A frame assembly having four corners supports the cockpit and includes an upper frame and a lower frame that are rotatably connected to one another. A pair of shock-absorbing members is provided at each of the four corners of the frame so that the entire cockpit is isolated from shocks. By cushioning the entire cockpit as a whole, the need for individual shock-absorbing seats is obviated. The walls of the cockpit are spaced apart from the sidewalls of the watercraft and are interconnected to the sidewall of the watercraft by a flexible member so that the sidewalls of the watercraft move up and down in response to shocks independently of the walls of the cockpit. Each shock-absorbing member preferably includes an airbag and a dashpot but other shock-absorbing members are within the scope of the invention.

A catamaran adapted for high speed travel includes a first and second hull, or vaka, disposed transversely apart from one another and interconnected by an intermediate structure, or aka. First and second elongate air tubes are formed in respective interior sides of the vakas. Each air tube is in open communication with a leading end of the vaka within which it is formed and has a uniform depth from the leading end to the approximate center of gravity of the catamaran. Each air tube depth gradually lessens from the center of gravity to the stern. Both vakas are therefore thickened inwardly toward one another at about the center of gravity to create a gradually increasing constriction in air flow beneath the aka. An exhaust area begins where the constriction begins and extends to the stern.

A high-speed printing and sorting machine. A first diverter diverts a first batch of items into a first bin, a second diverter diverts a second batch into a second bin, and so on. A plurality of O-rings and flat belts confront one another and rotate in opposite directions to carry diverted items to their respective bins. A nip formed by opposed rollers causes the items to slow down. Protruding rollers constrain the items to momentarily deviate from a path of travel and the inherent resiliency of the O-rings is harnessed to snap the trailing ends of each slowing down leading item out of the way of the trailing item so that shingling may occur. If a gap between items is too large, the opposed rollers of the nip stop rotating until the gap is restored to a preferred distance so that the desired amount of shingling may be maintained.

A friction feeder apparatus for handling sheets of paper of differing thicknesses includes a first plurality of laterally spaced apart transport belts positioned in underlying relation to the paper and a second plurality of laterally spaced apart separator wheels positioned in overlying relation to the paper. The transport belts are staggered with respect to the separator wheels. A sheet of paper passing through the feeder apparatus is undeflected from the top as it encounters the transport belts and is unsupported from the bottom as it encounters the separator wheels so that the sheet of paper is not held flat as it passes through the feeder but instead is forced into a wave-like, sinusoidal-like shape. In a first embodiment, the separator wheels are downstream of a fixed nip roller and in a second embodiment, the separator wheels are upstream of the fixed nip roller.

A method for positioning a second flat item atop a flat first item includes the steps of: providing a first conveyor for transporting the first item and rotatably mounting a hard nip roller on an axle so that the hard nip roller engages the first conveyor. A second conveyor for transporting the second item is disposed at an angle relative to the first conveyor and a discharge end of the second conveyor meets the first conveyor at the hard nip roller. First and second soft nip rollers are mounted on the axle on opposite sides of the hard nip roller and are spaced apart from one another by a distance less than a width of the second item. The hard nip roller and the first and second soft nip rollers simultaneously engage the second item and separate it from the second conveyor, depositing the second item onto the first item.

Heat is transferred away from the rollers and base of a printer heater by introducing chilled water into the rollers and the base. The paper upon which print has been applied remains at an elevated temperature so that the drying of the print is not delayed. A conventional roller is modified by having an annular cavity formed in its interior and providing fluid communication between the cavity and a chiller. A conventional base is modified by the addition of a serpentine passageway formed in its interior and providing fluid communication between the passageway and the chiller. Cold water provided by the chiller to the roller prevents breaking down of oil in the bearings of the roller. Cold water provided by the chiller to the base carries the heat from the base, increasing the safety of the workplace and extending the working lifetime of the base and its related parts.

Method for cooling components subjected to high temperatures

The trailing ends of envelopes stacked vertically in a hopper are tapped by jostling members that oscillate in a horizontal plane. The tapping action breaks frictional bonds between contiguous items. The jostling members are mounted on a base plate that is adjustably mounted in overlying relation to a floor plate of the hopper to accommodate items of varying widths. A cam and cam follower arrangement causes oscillation of the floor plate and hence of the base plate and the jostling members. The jostling members may take the form of acute or right angle members, wheels, or the like.

A sheet feeder includes a bin into which items are stacked. The items are sequentially removed from the bottom of the stack as the sheet feeder operates. The items travel a longitudinal path of travel to a separator wheel that staggers the items as they exit the sheet feeder. A rocker plate at the bottom of the bin oscillates to jostle the items. The jostling breaks the bonds of friction between contiguous items so that the items are not bound to one another as they engage the separator wheel. A drive shaft transverse to the path of item travel rotates as the sheet feeder operates and carries a cam that rotates conjointly with the drive shaft and causes oscillation of a cam follower. The cam follower oscillates a transversely disposed bar about a transverse axis and the rocker plate is mounted to that bar.

Improvements in high-speed machines for inserting sheets into envelopes include a first apparatus for pre-opening envelopes after they are pulled from a hopper and before a blade-like envelope flap opener fully opens them. The first apparatus includes a roller and a roller housing having a top part that defines a small space between them through which a flap-including longitudinal edge of an envelope passes. The edge is constrained to form a curvature as it passes through the small space, causing the flap to open at least to some extent. A second improvement in pre-openers includes a cut out formed in an envelope support plate and a rigid deflector positioned in the path of the envelopes as they leave the hopper. The envelope flaps are partly opened as they are deflected below the plane of the support plate. A third improvement includes a plurality of vacuum dishes formed in an envelope-supporting plate. The vacuum dishes are in fluid communication with a source of air under negative pressure and parts of the address side of an envelope are pulled into the vacuum dishes when a vacuum is applied. This increases the separation between the address side of the envelope and the opposing side to facilitate the sheet insertion process.

Large items such as magazines or large envelopes lie flat upon and are transported by a first conveyor in a first, transverse direction until they sequentially encounter a frustoconical member rotatably mounted to a back wall. A second conveyor is disposed normal to the first conveyor so that it transports the items that have encountered the frustoconical member in a second direction normal to the first. A rotatably mounted barrier has a first, retracted position where it does not interfere with items approaching the frustoconical member and a second, deployed position where it stops the items short of the frustoconical member. The position of the barrier is controlled by information concerning postal routes. The items are sorted into sharply defined groups that are transversely staggered with respect to one another.

Envelope alignment of a vertical stack of envelopes in an envelope hopper is maintained by mechanically vibrating a preselected part of the hopper. In a first embodiment, the vibration is caused by a reciprocating shuttle having a wedge-shaped member attached to it. The reciprocating shuttle and wedge member are positioned at the bottom of the hopper so that the shuttle and wedge-shaped member support all of the envelopes. The reciprocation of the shuttle and hence the reciprocation of the wedge-shaped member continually jostles the envelopes. The wedge-shaped member ejects the lowermost envelope in the hopper when the reciprocating shuttle is displaced from a retracted position to an extended position. A motor is used to cause continuous reciprocation of the shuttle. In alternative embodiments, different parts of the envelope hopper are vibrated by any suitable vibration-causing member.

A feeder is rotatably mounted in cooperative relation to a discharge end of a conveyor system. In a first position, the feeder is in line with the conveyor system so that the path of travel of conveyed articles is not changed. In a second position, the feeder device is disposed at a right angle to the conveyor system so that the path of travel of conveyed articles is changed by ninety degrees. An adjustable length conveyor belt enables the discharge of conveyed articles into the feeder at differing positions, depending upon the size of the articles. A pair of upstanding walls having sloped edges reciprocates as the feeder operates to ensure that all articles are in shingled relation to one another so that the articles are fed into the feeder one at a time in the substantial absence of jamming.
