A rotor assembly for an electric motor for a turbomachine defines an axis of rotation. The rotor assembly includes a jacket member that is hollow and that defines an inner radial surface facing inwardly toward the axis of rotation. Furthermore, the rotor assembly includes a magnet member that is received within the jacket member. The magnet member includes an outer radial surface facing outwardly from the axis of rotation. The jacket member is made of a sintered composite material having carbon filament and a sintered matrix. Additionally, the inner radial surface of the jacket member abuts against the outer radial surface of the magnet member to retain the magnet member in a radial position relative to the axis.

Methods and systems are provided for determining a reference position associated with a variable geometry member. One exemplary method involves actuating the variable geometry member in a first direction with a first reference torque and obtaining a first position associated with the variable geometry member in response to the first reference torque. After actuating the variable geometry member with the first reference torque, the method continues by actuating the variable geometry member in the first direction with a second reference torque that is less than the first reference torque, obtaining a second position associated with the variable geometry member in response to the second reference torque, and identifying the second position as the hard-stop reference position when a difference between the first position and the second position is less than a fault threshold.

A method for calibrating an actuator system for a turbocharger variable nozzle, the actuator system comprising an electronically controllable actuator coupled with a variable-geometry member of the nozzle and operable for causing movement thereof, and an electronic controller operable for controlling the actuator, the electronic controller having a memory for storing data. The method comprises (a) supplying a flow of fluid through the nozzle, (b) causing a continuous or stepwise movement of the actuator so as to move the variable-geometry member to cause a continuous or stepwise change in flow rate of the fluid through the nozzle, monitoring the changing flow rate, and recording at least two different points representing two different actuator positions and corresponding flow rates, and (c) storing in the memory of the electronic controller a multi-point calibration representing actuator position as a function of an input parameter designed to achieve a desired flow rate.
