An Application Programming Interface (API) processes object storage requests in an object storage format that are received from client applications. A mapper maps the object storage formatted requests into database statements and executes the statements within a database management system. Results returned from the statements are mapped by the mapper to object-storage constructs and provided to the API in object storage format. The object storage formatted requests are provided from the API to the client applications to satisfy the original client applications' requests.

Seamless integration between object-based environments and database environments

A join plan creates an intermediate table from two or more database tables within a database. In doing so, at least one projected and compressible column within one of the database tables is identified, where the column contains data values to which the application of a compression data transformation results in a reduction in the size of the data values. The program storage device comprises a medium for storing instructions performing the method steps outlined above.

A method, apparatus, and article of manufacture for optimizing SQL queries in a relational database management system involving aggregate and grouping functions. A local aggregation operation is performed on one or more processors of a massively parallel processor (MPP) computer system, wherein rows of the table that are local to each processor are locally aggregated to create one or more aggregate result rows. The aggregate result rows created by each of the local aggregation operations are then re-distributed to one or more processors and coalesced into a global aggregate result row by a global aggregation operation.
