An apparatus, system, and method are disclosed for policy-based secure destruction of data. The method for policy-based secure destruction of data is provided. In one embodiment, the method includes storing a data destruction policy, wherein the data destruction policy defines at least one predetermined data destruction parameter. The method may also include referencing the data destruction policy to obtain the data destruction parameters in response to a predetermined data operation. In a further embodiment, the method may include executing a data destruction process in accordance with the data destruction parameters.

Files may be retrieved using the metadata to identify the storage pool where the file is stored, and the service class listed within the metadata may be used to control the manner in which the file is handled. A method and system for use in electronic data retention are provided. The method includes receiving, via electronic communication, a request indication indicating a request to delete, shred, purge, or remove a record from a data retention system; generating a determination, by a processor in response to instructions stored on a non-transitory storage medium, indicating that the record is associated with a hold indicator that is not based on a retention period; and sending, via electronic communication, a denial of the request in response to the determination indicating that the record is associated with a hold indicator that is not based on a retention period.

Various embodiments are provided for facilitation of data retention using logical objects. Following an operation creating a redundant copy of the data performed on a scheduled interval, a logical object containing a number of managed file versions, represented by a number of member objects for a recovery point, is created. The logical object is adapted for reassignment between policies of the data retention policy construct associated with various recovery points. During the reassignment, the plurality of member objects representing the plurality of managed file versions are logically retained instead of performing a data copy operation to associate the plurality of managed file versions with another recovery point.

Provided are a method, system, and article of manufacture for managing encryption for volumes in storage pools. At least one storage pool is defined in a database, wherein storage pools are defined to include a plurality of data volumes, wherein each volume is included in at least one storage media. An encryption status is indicated for storage pools indicating whether encryption is enabled for the storage pool. An encryption key is provided for volumes included in storage pools for which encryption is indicated as enabled. The encryption keys for volumes included in the storage pools for which encryption is enabled are stored. The database associates the encryption keys with the volumes and the volumes with the storage pools.
