An optically variable security element is provided for securing valuable articles, whose areal expanse defines a z-axis perpendicular thereto, having a reflective areal region that displays at least two appearances that are perceptible from different viewing directions. The reflective areal region includes two relief structures arranged at different height levels in the z-direction and form a lower-lying and a higher-lying relief structure, each of which is furnished with a reflection-increasing coating that follows the course of the relief. The higher-lying relief structure displays a first optically variable effect in a first color, and the lower-lying relief structure is visible through the higher-lying reflection-increasing coating itself, or through grid spaces or gaps in the higher-lying reflection-increasing coating and displays a second optically variable effect in a second, different color. The security element is furnished in an interior layer provided contiguously or in some regions, with at least one machine-readable feature substance.

Optically variable security element

An optically variable security element is provided for safeguarding articles of value. The security element has a feature layer containing, in a common plane, first and second feature regions arranged so as to accurately fit together. The first feature regions contain a first embossing lacquer layer of a first embossing lacquer into which an embossed structure that creates a first optical effect has been embossed. The second feature regions contain a second embossing lacquer layer of a second embossing lacquer into which an embossed structure that creates a second, different optical effect has been embossed. The first and second embossing lacquers have different solidification properties and different optical properties. A production process is provided for such an optically variable security element, and to embossing arrangements comprising a semi-finished security element product and means of impressing an embossed structure.

A method for manufacturing an optically variable security element, so that for a viewer of the security element, a first color impression is created through the combination of at least the color effects of a first embossing lacquer layer and the coating, and a second, different color impression is created through the combination of the color effects of at least the first embossing lacquer layer, a second embossing lacquer layer and a coating.

Method for producing an optically variable security element

An optically variable security element has a multicolored, reflective areal region including a first relief structure disposed at a higher level than a second relief structure. The first relief structure has a first ink coating and the second relief structure has a second, different ink coating. The two relief structures overlap in an overlap region. The first ink coating of the first relief structure is disposed at a higher level in the overlap region and has at least one recess the dimension of which is more than 140 &#x3bc;m. The first ink coating comprises an edge region adjoining the recess, and as a bicolor register feature the first relief structure lets the edge region of the first ink coating appear with a first color impression and the second relief structure through the recess lets the second ink coating appear with a second, different color impression in mutual register.

Optically variable security element having reflective surface region

An optically variable security element wherein the areal expansion whereof defines a z direction standing perpendicularly thereon, and has a multicolored, reflective areal region. The areal region includes two relief structures arranged at different height levels in the z direction. The relief structures are each supplied with an ink coating which produce a different color impression. The ink coating of the relief structure disposed at a higher level is configured in the feature region as a regular or irregular grid with grid elements and grid spaces. The dimensions of the grid elements and/or grid spaces are below 140 &#x3bc;m at least in one direction, so that, in the feature region, for a viewer from at least one viewing angle, the ink coating of the relief structure disposed at a lower level is visible through the grid spaces of the ink coating of the relief structure disposed at a higher level.

A method for manufacturing a value document includes: providing a value document substrate; printing the value document substrate with magnetically orientable effect pigments which are dispersed in a UV-curable lacquer; the step of exposing the lacquer containing the magnetically orientable effect pigments to a dynamic magnetic field; the step of irradiating the lacquer containing the effect pigments with UV radiation; and optionally the step of embossing the cured or at least partially cured UV lacquer.
