A seat belt arrangement for a motor vehicle, with at least one seat belt for the protection of a vehicle occupant seated on a vehicle seat; at least one inflatable gas bag arranged on the seat belt for protecting the vehicle occupant. The gas bag includes a passage through which the seat belt extends and to which at least one inflatable chamber of the gas bag adjoins, wherein during or after inflation of the gas bag at least a sub-section of a wall of the passage presses indirectly and/or directly against the seat belt such that the gas bag couples to the seat belt and follows an extension movement of the seat belt and hence a movement of the vehicle occupant, and wherein the seat belt is at least partly surrounded by a casing element at least within the passage.

An apparatus and method for folding and packaging an airbag includes a tapered concentrator. The airbag can be a head or side-window airbag. The concentrator has an inlet and an outlet whose dimension is smaller than the inlet. Feeding the airbag through the concentrator squeezes or compresses (i.e., folds) the airbag to a predetermined cross section corresponding the outlet size of the concentrator. The airbag can include a strap at one end portion thereof. The strap is feed through the concentrator, such as by pulling the strap therethrough. Pulling the strap pulls the airbag through the smaller outlet, which compresses or folds the airbag. Also, by placing an airbag package having an inlet sized to the outlet of the concentrator adjacent to the outlet of the concentrator, and feeding the strap through the airbag package, the folded airbag is inserted into the package substantially simultaneously with the folding operation. The concentrator can include pre-orienting elements for forming uniform folds.

Apparatus for folding and packaging an airbag and method thereof

The invention relates to an airbag, especially a lateral airbag, preferably in the shape of a tube, which is connected to at least two points on the motor vehicle and accommodated in its non-inflated state in a curved storage area. The invention provides for at least one tensioning cord ( ) between the gas bag and a point of attachment to the motor vehicle, whereby said tensioning cord ( ) can be tautened by the inflating gas bag. A preferred version provides for the tensioning cord ( ) to be attached with one end to the gas bag ( ) and with the other end to the motor vehicle (F ), whereby, when the gas bag inflates, the cord's point of attachment on the gas bag, together with the gas bag, is able to move away from the point (F ) where the tensioning cord ( ) is attache to the motor vehicle. In this way the gas bag can be tautened without the need for additional mechanical or electrical components.

A gas bag folding system is disclosed for a gas bag used in an air bag module, as well as a process and device for holding a gas bag in this manner. A top and bottom layer of the gas bag have each at least one main fold, the main folds extending separately from each other. To fold the bag in this manner, the empty gas bag is outspread so that it has a top layer and a bottom layer, the two layers are separately folded and the folds are gathered together to the required size for packaging in an air bag module. A device for folding the bag in this manner includes separate folding devices which extend at least approximately perpendicular to the top and bottom layers of an outspread gas bag that are associated to the top and bottom layers of the gas bag and can be moved in the direction of the outspread gas bag, and in that an overpressure generator that can be connected to the gas bag.

A flame protection device for gas bags in air bag modules that use a gas generator. The air bags have at least one dart, and the flame protection device can be folded along with the air bag. A member guiding the gas jet of the gas generator is provided as a flame protection device, the member being arranged and configured in such a way that the gas circulating between the darts flows in at least an approximately parallel direction to the darts.

A method and device for folding an airbag having a inner main fold and an outer main fold in a folded state. The airbag is fixed to a working surface, extended along a longitudinal axis away from the working surface, and fixed in the area of the inner or outer main fold. The airbag is then expanded, or contracted, to form the outer or inner main fold, respectively, and then compressed toward the working surface. A shaping body is preferably inserted into the airbag through an inflation opening to extend the airbag so that a folding element may activated to retain the airbag against the shaping body to form the inner or outer main fold.
